For $1000 a turbo is out of your price range. I bought a used turbo, and after the exhaust, and gauges, I was in it about $1500.
I would defniatly do gauges. Pyro, of course. If your truck is an auto...a trans temp gauge. A water temp gauge, and maybe a oil pressure gauge (the stock ones suck).
If your truck is an auto, then a tranny cooler as well...to keep that thing nice and cool (increases the life of the tranny).
Rig up a custom intake. Then either build, or buy an exhaust. Then turn up that pump.
