Default Good Buy? - 1987 F250 6.9 IDI

I recently have bought a regular cab, 1987 F250 with the 6.9 Diesel. It has 117,000 thousand miles on it. She leaks some transmission fluid, engine oil, and the rear diff is wet.

I think the engine oil is coming from the valve cover gaskets. It runs all the way down the side and it all gummed up underneath the valve covers. The gasket is shot and crumbles when you break try to break a piece.

I have no clue about the transmission fluid. The clutch just went out when I was pulling my ice shanty home. It clicked in all the way to the floor. It snaps back when I pull on it but snaps right back in when depressed. Soo I had to power shift her home.

Shes got a bit of rust. Nothing terrible for an 1987 dealing with Wisconsin winters its whole life.

The heater blower also doesnt work. I think the mice got to it, because it smells a bit of rat pee in the cab.

So the ultimate question is, was it worth the $1000 I payed for it?

It does have some nice tires with solid lugs left on it.

Thanks

Go to threads posted by me, there's one labeled before you buy an IDI, read it and go through the list. It doesn't sound to bad from how you described. The a/c and heater doesn't work in mine either.

Thats what Im gonna have to do. There is a ton of dirty and stuff that stuck to the oil and its caked on it. So do you think $1000 was a solid deal?

The low mileage engine and transmission in that thing are worth the price you paid. Get some valve cover gaskets and pull the heater box out for a good dusting. The clutch could be failing hydraulics or your firewall is tearing. Ford sells a repair kit for about $20 if that is the case. Have someone push on the clutch pedal while you watch the clutch master for movement to see if that is the case.

Ill have to check it out this weekend. Hopefully the firewall isnt tearing. Thank you! I already have the valve cover gaskets, just gotta put them on. I want to give her a good cleaning to really pinpoint where this oil is coming from. But, regardless it needs valve cover gaskets, BAD! I also have oil in/on my air filter...

Before you start putting water anywhere on the top of that engine or cleaner to wash it down, do not, I repeat do not get the injector pump wet unless it is cold. You will be spending money on a new one cause the head will go out on you (Ask me how I know)
