You know there are plenty of those trucks coming up for auction in Arizona too, right?

Military is getting rid of all the conventional trucks to go to a cabover.

Be sure to look me up if you ever decide to take a trip to AK.

Almost all the military surplus comes to the same place, Government Surplus Auctions at Government Liquidation it works somewhat like ebay.

I don't see much in Arizona right now as far as trucks go (apart from two cummins powered dodge aircraft tugs), but there is a lot of stuff around, and if you are willing to travel a little the market opens up greatly.

The newer trucks are all automatic... something about soldiers and driving manual transmissions. The older ones (they are getting rid of duece and a half's and such still) have 5 speed overdrive transmissions.

This truck is a 5 speed allison but the transfercase is actually an overdrive t-case. It's got low range and overdrive, no direct option.

This one uses a larger engine normally aspirated, the ones newer than this have a turbo diesel (smaller engine with a turbo for about the same power), and those are also the ones that tend to have CTIS (central tire inflation system). The CTIS trucks are single wheel for the most part (or all, haven't seen any dualled anyway). I prefer the duals and non CTIS, CTIS can be a pain because of places for air leaks. The concept is really nice though... air down from the cab...

The big 6x6 tractor trailers (there is a tractor version of this truck as well, but there are larger ones) have either an allison automatic or a slap shift 20 speed (I think it was 20, that or 18). You manually select gears, but the shifting and clutching is automatic, it has a ratcheting shifter with a lot of options.

Prices vary on the auction, this one was less than $4k.

It's always a slight risk on the surplus sites because you don't get to drive it etc, this one worked out well.

Here's something for you in TX: TX M109a3

Site might require you to register to see it...

Stock, these trucks mileage isn't really all that great. If you tune it for mileage you might get 10, it's basically a semi truck and that's all you tend to get from something once you get to that size. I think they army has them heavily detuned and they don't run much advance at all so more like 5-6 if you don't mess with it from their settings. I haven't ran mine enough to see what the actual mileage is yet.

NM M816 wrecker (the price on this one is down to $9500 now). These trucks are basically cranes pretending to be wreckers. Think it's a 20,000 lb winch on the crane, a 50,000 lb aft winch, and a 20,000 lb winch on front. He'll even deliver to you!

PA HEMTT M985 for sale <--- if you want to go really big... IIRC HEMTTs are exactly the legal width for road use in the US without permits
