Default 4Spd to zf5 on a 6.9 with hydraulic clutch?

My truck bed got run over by a big rig. Thank God for tough trucks! Anyway, I've got to work on her anyway. Gives me a good excuse for finishing her up. I want to do a zf5 into her. I've been told it has to be a trans out of a diesel 4x4. Is this true or will a Gasser trans work? Also, on some trans you can just swap the tailhousing to a 4x4. Just need to know what trans to buy. Also, what will need.to be changed to do this. I know always do a clutch. I know this is a lot of??? But, I don't have much time.when I'm home to work on it. Need everything gathered before I start. Thanks in advance.

It needs to be a 4x4 transmission, if you use a 2wd transmission you will have to replace the output shaft and the tail case with 4wd versions. It needs to be from a diesel as well. It's possible to use one from a 460 but only 2 of the mounting holes line up so you have to drill the rest and modify the starter mounting spot I believe. If your truck already has a hydraulic clutch linkage for a 4spd, you wont have to change anything there as both transmissions use the same slave cylinder.

Thanks Sycostang67. Hopefully I found one. I thought from what I'd heard, as long as I had 4x4 diesel, it shud fit right in. Hope to hear from the guy soon. Thanks again.

Also if you find an F-Superduty 2wd with a driveline brake it will work, its a 4x4 transmission housing, take off the driveline brake and put your stock case on. Good luck!

Im not sre if you know this or not ..... these ngines are not like anyother Diesel ... they need to be revved up inorder to make power ... power dosent really start till around 2K and will pull all the way to 3200 rpm's ..... by giving it OD your gonna be lugging it and your gonna see that it was really not worth the time to nvest in a new trans .... unless your planning to re gear inorder to keep up the RPM's ... I have 3.55's and 35's runnning freeway @ 65 = 2300 rpm's .... these engines were originally put into UPS trucks where they ran as high as 3K all day .... thats how they like to be ran .... like the old detroits ... slam fingers in door and drive ticked off all day ... I run mine to the gov. each shift and manage 19 on the freeway and 17 in city .... yor not gonna hut it by runningn high rpm's
