Beer i need opinions! new 600 dollar toy

Hey guys. I'm new to the site, and the idi 6.9s so i got a few questions. Let me descibe the truck. I found a 86 f250 4x4 6.9 delivering pizzas to a house stuck back in the woods. It was sitting in the weeds with a for sale sign, busted brake line and two dead batterys. I waved 600 bucks in the guys face, and he took it and ran! Now I am the proud owner of a 164k milesuper doodie ( as my boss callsit) . He thinks he's hot stuff in his powerchoke . I was wondering if there was anything I should look for as signs of neglect, things that should be replaced after xxxxxx amount of miles, ext. Thingsyou would replace ifyou bought it from an air

head he didn't even Kno diesel motors need the block

heater to be PLUGED IN UNDER 40*!!

Also, when I droveithome,it seemed to have decent power and run smooth. I was wondering if I turn up the injection pump 2-4 flats, will thatgiveme a good powerbump, and is it wise to advance the timing for more gains? Or will it cause more problems than its worth? I am a mechanic, just not familiar with diesel. All help appreciated!!!

Thank you for the response so quick! I actually just changed all that yesterday.one question I do have is what is a water separator, and how do you Kno if it is in good working order? One of my friends works at peterbuilt and told me to check if it has been sitting.

And this is also a big question. Ive been driving it for 1 week and it is surprisingly well mannered And has not shown any gremlins besides the tach having a mind of its own, but still want to push a little more fuel and give the motor a kick in the ***. I just want to Kno if its worth messing with the fuel and timing or just go straight to head studs and turbo? Also, I want to flush the radiator, and was told that coolant additives are almost mandatory in these motors. What additives should i look for and where should I look for them?

Did you change the fuel filter? Was there a screw on bowl on the bottom of the old one?

How much did you bump it up? Do you see a big change in egts, like enough to worry with no load? And how would a little timing advance affect performance and reliability? I Kno gassers usually like a little timing when you add fuel, is it the same concept? I've also seen some talk about manual timing advance using a choke cable attached to the advance ARM on the ip. Seems good in theory, but has any one actually had GAINS from this? Again, thanks for the quick responses guys

Thanks man, I think ill go for it. Do you or anyone know how much I should turn the pump to advance for 4 flats? Some one on another site said 4 from stock is the smoke point, and I don't mind a little tailgate security

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Scratch that 4 flats, that was for turbo psi turn up. 1.5 flats to start

The fuel filter is a fuel/water seperator. The water drains down into the bowl that screws onto the bottom of the filter. There is a drain petcock on the bottom of the bowl. I like having the bowl on mine. Just an extra step to help keep waterous-fuel from reaching the ip and injectors.
