Default What truck to buy? high mile 12 v or low mile 24v?

First, thank you for all the previous info on diesels. I must admit that through reading the countless posts I've found here I have slowly begun to have diesel running through my veins. I found 2 diesels that could begin my endless journey into the diesel world. I just want to see your opinions on the 2.

1) 1995 dodge diesel, 2500. 290k miles, 20k on engine and fresh tranny rebuild (auto) $9000 obo. it is extended cab- we don't have kids but this will need to haul kids (oneday). How are carseats and reliability of this... I know if I spend $9k on a truck and it breaks down alot I will be in the doghouse with the wife.

2) 1999 cummins, 2500, auto. 84K miles. new FASS lift pump and new VP44 injector pump. New bfg ATs. extended cab, short box. Auto tranny.

I like the idea of 84k vs the high miles on 12valve.. but I have heard all the raving of the 12 valve, so I would be open to the idea. I also like the idea of 4 doors on the extended cab 99. What scares me is that it may be the 53 block (i'm having the seller check now).

If it is the 53 block, what would be your opinion on the 2?
I want a good long lasting truck
I want a kid friendly hauler
I need something that will get decent mileage (for a truck)

Thanks in advance!

Who in their right mind would pay $9k for a 17 year old truck with almost 300k miles?

I agree some think these trucks are worth big money but if you shop around you can find reasonable ones. When you do find a good price on one act quick because it will go quick. I wiouldn't be afraid of a 53 block just use that as a negotiation tool, chances are if it hasn't cracked by now it may never.

I see that... 200k less miles and 4 years newer just sounds like a better choice to me IMO!

The 9k price is asking a lot for an old truck. I would go with the 24v. Definitely if it doesnt have the 53 block.

As much as id love to have a 12v, the ones i see selling around here are either old beat to death farm trucks with 400k miles, or completely over priced..

Good luck with your decision though. The 24v sounds like a decent priced truck.
