There's a thread running on Diesel Power's forum where a guy did his 2nd gen rebuild for around 7k himself.

Sounds like someone is trying to sell you a bag of potatoes and you'd end up getting road apples instead.

This may be a late reply for this line. I'm new to this forum, but not to the dealership game. Forget the dealer, find a local diesel mechanic. If there isn't one nearby, call around your state.

I just went into upgrade my brakes at a 4x4 specialist, and don't you know, I have a front end that is needing full replacement according to the hustler at the counter . . .wanted 2800 dollars. None of it was true. Just wanted to sell some business.

Use your head out there.

For 15K that better be a built race engine, that has a balanced rotating assembly, fly cut pistons, cam, ported head, fire rings and all that. Where are you located?

You can even find a pretty clean new truck ( new used) for 15k, so the hell with the stealership

I think you could buy a Cummins crate engine for less than that

I can't see 15k being anywhere reasonable. I've seen whole trucks for that in the sf, bay area. I would find a second opinion from a good diesel mechanic. That sounds crazy to die at 160k. My buddy just retired his '90 d350 at 750k, something seems screwy
