Default Compound Twins Explained For Non-Gearheads....

non-intercooled

intercooled

RED is the exhaust.
BLUE is the air.

air enters the atmosphere turbo (the larger of the two) and is fed into the engine mounted turbo (the smaller of the two), then directed into the engine or the intercooler if the truck is intercooled and then into the engine. the technical name for this setup is "compounded turbos", most people just call them twin turbos or just twins, its just easier.....

hope that helps some of the new "non-gearhead" guys with understanding how twins work.

i hope that picture works ok, i drawed it in paint....i didnt make all of it red so people could make sense of it, that is why i used pink for the turbo's and maroon for the exhaust piping, same with the blue.

Looks good, plain and simple. really explains a lot with the picture, you know what they say, a picture is worth 1000 words.

On an additional note about compound turbo systems, the exhaust is routed first to the smaller turbo and then to the larger one.
