Default setting up alternator sensored tachometer

i just installed a Autometer tach with the sensor on the alternator and was wondering if there is a way to set these up at home or is it just a "get it close" kind of thing.

you know by the pulley size. every accessory spins at a certain percent of engine rpm. i used to have the formula handy when i set up my air compressor (not on the truck) so i wasn't overspinning the pump.
