Suggestions For Motor Oil
going to be changing the oil soon and was wondering what every one else uses. i have talked to two different people and they both say different things. one says dino oil and the other says synthetic. another question i have is how much oil do i need to get. i dont have an owners manual and there was some writting under the hood in some type of wax pen that said 12 quarts.

i seggest you use what you like. i use rotella. and valvoline. have run the castrol too. i think its oil and as long as you change it, it will do is job. if you want every inch of performance out of you engine. then run a synthetic.
synthetics seem to last a little longer on the change intervals. but sometime its not worth the money!

I'm partial to one of course. Agree on using whatever you are comfortable with. Syns do outperform dinos and will add longevity, but if you plan on changing it every 5k no matter what it is, then money may be a concern.
Lot's of good info out there on the advantages of syn.
As for amount. should be 10 qt without the filter, to the 10.75 mentioned should be right on the money. 11 ought to fill you up.

From what I've been reading in the TDR, Try to find a CI-4+ oil unless you have the new truck with the DPF.
I've used Rotella for quite a while now, and have been satisfied, but it's now a CJ-4 oil and for our older trucks, the CI-4 and CI-4+ rated oils are said to be better.

CI-4+ is all I will run. There are about 3 companies out there still making it. We found out the hard way about the CJ-4 oils. It wiped out 2 cams in the pulling tractors. To put it bluntly, the lubraction factors are not there due to the new emissions standards. The industry reformulated what needed to be done and though it works on the new trucks, our old dino engines do not like it. We could see noticeable cam wear from the tappets in out trucks which was not something you wanted to see with a custom ground cams and all the time we had into it. The first cam blew back in april of this year. It was my boss's pulling tractor and since I helped build it, I got blamed. We figured I had done something wrong with the cam bearings even though I had no recall of doing anything wrong with the install. When Chris called us up 3 weeks later with a cam I didn't install, we knew something was up. The CJ-4 oil is also creating alot of blow by in our trucks. The Alcohol burners were having monumental problems in that there was so much meth getting into the oil. The CI-4+ oil solved those problems. The one I use is Penn Grade. Usually it costs about $32 for 3 gal so the price isn't that bad. I run it in my trucks, my old boss runs it in his 48 big rigs and him and his friends use it in their tractors (about 12 tractors). Runs great for us.

I run Cen-Pe-Co 15W-40. I think that the oil thing is a personal opinion, use what you can easily get access to. I run Cen-Pe-Co because it is what we use in our semis at home and have never had a problem with it. It is a parafin based oil, check out their website. www.cenpeco.com
