Dude, when youre taking close up pics - switch the camera to the little flower looking thing - then your pics will be much better.

Can this be accomplished with just a cross member between the frame rails or does it have to incorporate the steering gear to work.

No, it would help but who knows how much. The steering brace supports the sector shaft as well as connecting the frame rails with the same structural piece. This relieves torsional force from the gearbox mount, helping to transmit the force across both frame members.

The other idea from GRI was a steering brace that only went from one frame rail to connect the gear box. This removed the torsional forces from the frame rails twisting and pulling the gear box in different directions.
