I did have the 48 RE Auto in the 04 QC i had... I mean it worked good. But just wasnt same as a 6spd. But it never broke down either... I dont know anything about the autos in the 1st gen trucks tho, didnt know if they was junk or if they was fair/good. One of those deals i have 2nd and 3rd gens in stick, and 3rd gen auto, But never a 1st gen.

No question about it. If you intend to be doing anything more than casual, light towing: Manual (Gutbag) tranny. The Dodge automatics all the way up through and including the 48REs in the last '07 5.9s were based on the same original 727 torqueflight that first showed up in the mid 60s behind Chrysler V8s. They did not get lockup torque conveters behind the Cummins until '94. Until then, towing was a low mileage heat-generating ordeal, at best. They can be OK with the extra coolers and better converters/valve bodies available aftermarket, but...
I'd ask about the tranny in the blue one, if anything's been done to it. But it'll never tow anything much with those tires anyway.
