MAKING A 2500 RAM A DUALLY
I have never seen one actually. It seems quite possible but I would think you would have to replace the rear differential and axles to the Dana 80. Then you would just need to attach the fender flares for the body and slap some tires on. There may be a stronger drive shaft involved unless hes just doing it for looks. It seems more than feasible though. As far as I know the dually is an upgraded version with more leaf springs and tires for traction and weight distribution to keep the truck from squatting as much.
I would tell him to just buy a dually. 3500's have heavier frames and suspensions. Unless he just wants the look then he should try to find a wrecked truck and then he could swap the rears w/ the hub adapters and have the fenders.
Where are you geting this information. I thought that the diesels all had the same frame? now i could see a different number of leafs and a different axle Ie aam 10.5 or 11.5 2nd gen 70/80
my buddy has an 04 ram 3500 dually and his step dad has an 07 ram 2500 SRW. If you crawl under and look at both trucks the frame is alot taller and heavier on the 3500. Also 2nd. gen ram 2500's came w/ either dana 70's or 80's depending on the trans.
thats just about true with all diesels, or trucks in general. 1 tons have heavier frames than 3/4 tons. and the number of springs is just about always different, unless you have like a heavy duty 3/4 ton, then they use 1 ton springs in some cases but the frames are still different. now im not sure about dodge but for a while ford was using the same rear end in some 3/4 tons as they were in the 1 tons. so you could run duals on that axle. but..... the older trucks (87 to 97) had 2 1/2" wide leaf springs, (if the truck was made to be a dually.) if it was just a regular pickup, it would have 3 inch wide leafs, so the inner dual would rub unless you had a different offset rim. im not sure if this is the same case for dodge, i'd be curious to know.
dodge 2500/3500 have the same 3" springs. and as for the 2nd gens I know it mattered with the trans all manual diesels have an 80 and all 3500's are all 80's if you have an auto 2500 then you got a 70
Yup , 1 tons just got an extra overload spring in the pack and new badges... The conversion is very straight forward, new rear axle and spacers for the front axle fenders and airbags, you have yourself a dually. I know of a write up I'll post a link to it when I come across it.
as jake said, on the 3rd gens, the only difference is the width of the axle, overloads, and a 3 instead of a 2 on the badges...
If he is going to do it.. just tell him to leave his front end alone with the standard wheels.. dont go dually wheels... looks 100x's better
