Question Tire size for 2001 Ram 2500 4x4 Cummins

Bought this truck from original owner. He bought with 265/75R16 from dealer/factory. He changed tires to 285/75R16.

My question is this: Do the larger tires adversly affect the transmission on my truck?

And just for info does the size difference make any difference in my MPG? Or power?

Thanks,
Terry

You might gain a little extra traveling distance with the same speed, but that's about it.

What transmissin do you have? If you have an auto you might want to reprogram for the larger tire size, but its shouldnt matter that much since the increase in size isnt a lot.

Thanks for the responses. Here is a little more information: It is an automatic - 6 cyl. Also I have had "The Edge" installed to help with efficiency and power.

Asking about the tires with respect to transmission mostly because it tends to shift very quickly from lower speeds into Drive. Trying to decide if I stay with the 285's that the previous owner changed to or go back to the 265's as he originally purchased.

On another query: I am also wondering with respect to gas mileage - is there an advantage to putting in 4" exhaust or am I getting what I need from having the Edge installed.

Thanks again,
Terry

exhaust can't hurt. but if you don't have a fuel system on your going to be needing a new injection pump if your not careful. what edge do you have? any gauges?

Terry, dont worry about the tires - they are really not that much bigger that the 265's. Your speedometer will be out by about 5-7% so keep that in mind.

A better air filter and 4" exhaust will help it breath better and provide somewhat lower exhaust gas temps but its not going to help your mileage at all (you can not believe the claims that a lot of manufacturers make). You will not really see any better mileage by having the edge install either.

Which Edge do you have (there are several)?

The best money you can spend on your truck is a full set of guages (Pyrometer, Boost, Fuel pressure and transmission temp guages)....as well as a better lift pump. The stock lift pumps in these trucks are really crappy and can cost you a bunch of money if you dont take some precautions like installing a fuel pressure guage.

Dr. Evil Thanks for Info;
I have an Edge with attidude, has quad readout presently showing constant readout of Boost, Trans Temp, Lift pump pressure, and Exh Temp.
As far as Lift Pump I replaced it with stock pump about 6 months ago; unfortunently.
So you feel I need a better intake, what type do you recommend, should I include a bigger Turbo?. And possibly go to a 4" exhaust.
All help is greatly appreciated, thanks Terry

With what you currently have id get a good intake (AFE, S&B) and a 4" turbo back exhaust system.

Thats not an upgrade Terry - if you want to bump performance, you have to look at an Airdog, FASS or RASP lift pump. None of these are cheap, but neither are injector pumps.
