Default Codes

This is the first form I've ever been on, and is allso the first Diesel I've ever owned, so there are alot of things I don't understand yet. My question is..I see alot of people talking about diffirent codes their getting.. Can I some how retreive these on my pickup insturment panel or overhead deal? Or do you need to have a programmer or some type of code reader. Sorry if this has been discussed before, or is a dumb question. I'm just trying to learn more about my rig. it's a 07.5 with the 6.7 in it. Thanks

Dont be sorry ask away its how everyone learns , Welcome to the site ! and yes you need an OBDII scanner to retrieve and clear codes , Autozone and Advanced will do this for you for free But its best to have a scanner handy.

Is your Check Engine Light on ?

under the steering column is a multi port than has prolly about 12 pins to it....you can plug a scanner into this port and retrieve the codes

also alot of after market programmers offer code read as one of their perks

you can do the 3 key trick too and get most but not all codes
turn key on but dont start
key off
key on
key off
key on..............read codes in odometer window

Hey Sluggo, dont worry too much about the forums bud.. I bet before long you will feel right at home on here. As for your codes, I think any reputable programmer that plugs into your OBD II Port (under dash) will read codes from the ECM. But, if Im not mistaken, I think with the Dodges products, you can turn the key from the off position to the on position and back off and back on like 3 times, and it will list all current codes on the Driver Information Center on the dash..

Im sure some of our Dodge experts will chime in pretty quick.. But if your check engine light is on, try the off/on/off/on/off/on thing and see if anything pops up on there.

It is and I have, the first time I took it in was 2 day's after I bought it ...Replaced a sensor, have had it in for up dated flash, and 2 other times for check engine lite.. seems like all they do is reset lite... the oil change required message (overhead) comes on so often they showed me how to reset that. The nearest dealer from where I live is 110 miles so it's a pain....

Here is a wonderful scanner that I picked up...
ScanGauge II

www.scangauge.com

Or here is my poor mans write up on how error code dumping and self erasing...
OBD II Error Codes

Insert your ignition key. Turn it to the OFF position. Now turn it ON, OFF, ON, OFF, ON in less than 5 seconds. Leave it in the on position.

In the odometer display it should start to display codes. It starts with P PCU errors. This is to notify you that the error codes are coming. They would show up as Pnnnn. All error codes are listed in 4 digits. Write down all Pnnnn error codes that are displayed.

Here is also the Dodge FSM copy of all the error codes in a PDF file which you can save...

One thing to note Sluggo...you've got the 6.7... some of the codes for the 6.7 are different for the 5.9.

So when you're looking up your codes check what year the lists are from.

Good luck...sorry to hear you're having issues with a new truck.
