Topping Out
my brothers truck pops when he gets it about 2500 RPM kinda like a ricer does hitting the rev limiter i dont under stande why its doing it, he has a 95 ram 3500 nv4500 with 370 sticks, 4000 rpm governer springs, timing at 16.5*, #5 plate and a stock turbo with afe intake and 5" stacks why does it do this and mine doesnt
ya basically thats what it sounds like i havent been able to tell if its also coming from the engine compartment or not and when the pop occurs the smoke has a break in it. so it smokes up a storm but when its poping like that so is the smoke. mine doesnt do that but i have a phat shaft turbo with 18.5 timing instead of his stock turbo and 16.5 timing if that makes any difference.
that smoke is because he dosen't have the air to burn what fuel is making it in there. mine hazes perty bad with a 100 plate in stock position and 52PSI almost clears it up.....i'd hate to see the EGTs on his truck...... you need to put a fuel pressure gauge on there and see what is going on when it pops. see if the pressure drops. how long ago did he change the fuel filter? what about the preheater screen? just some thoughts.... mine pops a little when i'm above 2800 (sounds almost like a straight piped chevy 350 that has 2" exhaust.... if you have ever heard that before that is as close of a sound as i can relate it to) and i have 191's 370's and a 64/14 and stock timing (or so i believe if it ain't slipped) i'm sure i'm running out of fuel.... i'm too broke to buy an airdog to eliminate my problem.....
Maybe the overflow valve opening to soon.(letting fuel return back to system)

Overflow valve is located next to the radiator hose in the middle of the picture.
Mine popped a little when I would first start the truck. It hasn't popped since it was replaced.
Check your fuel pressure from the lift pump to the injector pump.
Engine off, manually operate lift pump.
If I remember correctly the overflow valve should open at 18-20 psi.
Hope this helps.
