Dyno Questions
Alright where to begin, we got a dyno event coming up 2 weeks at the local diesel shop and im a little on edge if to do it or not, first of all its a mustang/load dyno, and the operator will be driving my truck, and i get to sit in and watch gauges, first question is how hard will this be on my truck and second is will my nv4500 hold up to it? I know the clutch will be fine but im wondering about internals, the truck was at the shop about 3 weeks ago and had a new updated mainshaft put in due to me snapping the old mainshaft and the mechanic said the tranny looked great and so did the clutch so a new mainshaft was all that was needed, but will it hold? third is what egts should i back off at and how long should i allow him to hold it at a high temp?, Dont really have the funds right now to do tranny repairs so i was just looking to get some input on if this thing is gonna do some damage or not, oh and to mention truck has a 53 block, was a little concerned with putting a hefty load on it and stressing it out too much. fourth question is how does this dyno work, the guy really didnt have much time to go into detail with me just said they go through the gears and once its in 4th they drop a load on the dyno and the driver will put the pedal to the floor, last question is what should i run my smarty on? I appreciate any info you can give me guys! thanks!

let it rip.
1. imo, the dyno is easier on your truck than stomping on it on the street.
2. the nv4500 shouldnt have any problem handling that at all
3. the egts and boost will be a lil lower than the max you have seen on the street if u hold ur foot in it for say 20 seconds.
4. the dyno measures how fast it acclerates the wheel versus the load.
5. 9
6. if the 53 isnt cracked, a dyno wont cause it to crack. what causes them to crack is the rapid heating of the block like if some one jumps in a cold truck, and immediately starts driving it hard. the rapid increase in temp will cause the block to expand, and the thinner metal on the 53 block will crack.
good luck with the dyno

EGTs, 1450 is where I set my box to limit to, if you see much 1600+, get the %^&* out of the throttle. A couple seconds at that temp wont hurt it much, but in my opinion, I find 1450 the highest I ever wanna see. That said, I have had mine hit over 1600 for a couple secs on the dyno, but when i got there, I got off immediately. Not worth risking causing extra damage for a hand full of HP
The nv4500 will hold, the clutch will slip before the tranny gives. Iv seen stock n4500s handle over 700- 800 hp routinely without failing, aftermarket clutches in of course. Keep in mind that when dyno-ing, you're not shifting under full throttle and max boost like you would be on a drag strip, its one gear at WOT and go, shafts tend to break during shifting or hard launches rather than while in one gear.
And by the way, my truck is also a 53 block, its got close to 100 dyno runs on it in the last 2 and a half years, and no that is not exaggerating, testing a box for a company, I spent a crap ton of time on the dyno. No cracks what so ever. Just make sure your temps are in the operating range before mashing that pedal and you'll be fine. i'm with Ed, dyno-ing isnt as hard as romping it on the street.

I agree that I wouldnt see you breaking any gears. If you did break something on the dyno, I would say consider it a blessing that it didnt break on the street when you are driving because chances are if you break it on the dyno, it was going to go anyways. IMO the dyno is way less stress than playing on the street.
As far as 53 block, I dont know how many miles you have but I am a firm believer that if it has survived you this many years and anywhere close to 150k miles, you are fine. That problem is made to be bigger than what it really is. Most of them are weeded out by now I would say. I have 200k on my truck and I wont ever worry about my 53 block letting go. I have seen way more survive than fail.
With you posts about breaking stuff, you seem to have very little confidence in your truck. They arent that fragile you know.
