How to make a living with your diesel pickup....

Okay, we all love having trucks we can do anything with (except park anywhere close to the store), but how many of us have figured out a way to make a living with our trucks?

So, if you know of a way to make a living with your diesel pickup, let us know. Try to include a little "how to" on how to get started.

I, for one, have been trying to figure out how to get started transporting 5th wheel trailers, but have no idea how to get started. Scrapping metals isn't very profitable unless you have a big trailer.

Mingle 03-14-2010 07:31 PM

Bad weather ;) Vehicle Recovery :tu::tu:

Spurrit 03-14-2010 07:35 PM

Okay, now, elaborate; what all kinda investments and contacts need to be made? :moon:

Mingle 03-14-2010 07:36 PM

It's called meeting teenagers with Toyota pickup trucks, finding where they go "muddin" and just wait.. ;) You'll make ya some cash.

Spurrit 03-14-2010 09:06 PM

Hell if you're gonna go that route, buy a swampy pasture and invite them over. Offer to sell 'em beer, too. (kidding){well, unless they're hot 19 yr. old chicks:tu:}

92typhoon937 03-14-2010 09:55 PM

i haul stuff for people mostly been haulin cars around for friends and people i know for cash money and i scrap stuff which pays decent if u can get whole cars
and i made some money pullin people off snow banks and outta ditches lol

Spurrit 03-14-2010 10:45 PM

I have a hard time charging people for helping them get unstuck, unless they were just being retarded. I was raised right, I guess. :w2:

I have learned to just let your friends know that you have a trailer and let them find you jobs I have moved people, cars, heavy equipment, what ever will fit on the trailer i will haul and it pays off:tu:

If you want to transport RV's you can make some cash, but the bottom line net income is not really there. It is a career best suited for retired folks, or someone who either has supplemental income and wants to see the country, or doesn't mind making just enough to cover expenses and live out of their truck.

Horizon Transport is one of the better ones, rumor has it.....most of the companies run out of the Terre Haute, In area.

These days unless you're looking for just a couple bucks here & there it is hard to make decent money without expensive commerical carrier insurance, bonding, and permits....well, doing it the right (legal) way anyhow.

Pyro690 03-15-2010 08:26 AM

Round here its pretty easy to get a few bucks pulling people out of the ditch in winter. Highway Patrol likes to see a flashing amber light on the top of your truck, but thats bout all they care about. Friday and saturday nights pay better than the rest as people are trying to get home from the bar without Johnny Law knowing. :w2: :c:

Spurrit 03-15-2010 12:44 PM

The RV thing looks tempting, but they require trucks less than 5 years old. Dammit. I'd LOVE to get a deal delivering stock trailers.

92typhoon937 03-15-2010 08:43 PM

i only charged one person for pullin them out the other just slipped me a 20 i told him dont worry bout it but he said take it o well i am the same though if it fits on my trailer ill haul it

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

i have made good money haulin scrap to but that is only here and there not steady at all

Captain Call 03-15-2010 09:40 PM

find someone involved in heavy equipment......there's some extra $$$$$ in hauling buckets and such if you have the trailer.

moneyman_09 03-15-2010 09:57 PM

Pullin people out has made me alot. They only call me when noone else has a big enough rig and usually they are more than happy to pay me. College kids plus lots of beer trying to park in a bean field nothing better than 15-20 front wheel drive cars with there front bumpers level with the field. :tu:

92typhoon937 03-16-2010 07:22 PM

heh lol

Mr. Miyagi 03-16-2010 09:15 PM

You guys are brave, or must keep the mile-long disclaimer forms ready in the glovebox for these sue happy idiots to not take you to the cleaners when you remove their front bumper.

...and I sure wish I lived in whatever world ya'll do where some construction or logging outfit will pay you cash under the table to move their 5,000lb hoe bucket with a pickup & trailer that aren't bonded, insured, or belonging to the company or a legal contractor for the company.

Must be nice...

Hmm. You're relatively ignorant to who you're :edit: with, and apparently pretty dense to what constitutes sarcasm, so I guess, for the benefit of the moderation staff, I will give you a free pass.

Just this once, though. Cheers...

A numbnuts with an inferiority complex?

Most of us get along just fine without having to carry around a lawyer in our pocket and a box of release forms.
If you knew your ass from a hole in the ground, you'd realise that a lot of logging companies are smaller outfits that would be thrilled to save a few hundred dollars. They also know how quickly the big trucks tear up their roads into their sites, and that using a one ton truck and a flatbed when they don't need a big truck and a lowboy is a good thing.

In winter I usually make a few bucks and a couple cases of beer pulling people out of the snow. I don't charge but a lot of people will insist I take a 20 from them.

The only time I require payment is when its a hot girl, I require her number. :tu:

Spurrit 03-17-2010 04:55 PM

Just heard a song lyric today that was a little close to home; "I don't like small cars or great big women, but somehow, I always find myself in them!" :argh:

FastCR 03-17-2010 05:25 PM

haha so true lol

Really? Really??? lol I won't bother telling my life story here, but those who know me know that I am speaking from experience, and most certainly know my ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to these things.

And I was mistaken, most of the RV transport companies run out of Elkhart, Indiana, not Terre Haute. My sincerest of apologies if that has in any way worked towards shattering your dreams...

You should really check your attitude at the door--nobody likes people who insult first without absorbing knowledge and understanding situations. It makes you look bad.

Not sure why you're so abrasive. Does reality bother you? Your attitude sort of reminds me of that Henery Hawk in the Foghorn Leghorn cartoon. In fact, I think that's your knew nickname. Glad to meet you, Henery.

Too bad I had to work all day long--for prevailing wage mind you--and was not able to be here to see your reply in its original intent before Benjamin was so kind as to edit it for you. It would have been entertaining to read.

Perhaps you should stop wasting your energy attempting to insult me and direct it towards job hunting--there are thousands of positions available out there for those intent on actually showing up on time and working hard. If you'd like, it would be my pleasure to help you find employment. We are looking for a delimber operator--oh wait, apparently I have forgotten what a delimber is...lemme Google it here right quick like...

i make a living with my truck ... it takes me to the factory everyday and then back home.. hey its a living :)

DIRTYMAX2004 03-18-2010 06:33 AM

i have a hard time charging ppl for a tow because i cant count the number of times ive been pulled out of a snow bank or mud hole for free. just remember if you get it stuck you hook the chain up.

i will haul stuff for ppl too but i just charge them for the price of fuel or if its only a short distance i will do it for free. i just like to help ppl :tu: (plus its nice to have some favor stored up for the day all shit goes to hell)

This post is reflective of a nice Midwestern attitude. The pay for tow is more in tune with higher population density areas. :hellox:

Captain Call 03-18-2010 09:57 AM

Well I guess this thread went to hell in a handbasket. I don't "make a living" hauling stuff because I already have a job but a weekend run with something or moonlighting so to speak isn't unheard of for me. Usually I do it more as a favor for contractor friends that are tied up and will pay for my time and fill my tank. Maybe I take for granted the amount of contacts I have I don't know. So good luck in your search and keep it between the lines.

They hook it, I check their handi-work, and correct them. If they don't want to do the work, I'll keep driving. If they wanna do something dumb, they will. I don't NEED to help them. I'm not doing it for $$. But, if they pass me 20 when they are out rather than the 300 the local tow guys charge, its $ in my pocket and theirs. The 300 is for an "easy" tow, no winch. Bit of a monoploy here.

Spurrit 03-18-2010 11:28 AM

I tried that factory thing; made me claustrophobic.

godblessmud 04-10-2010 07:40 AM

I cant charge for a tow whether its in a ditch or in a mud pit...

But I have made decent money hauling stock trailers and anything on a goose neck in my free time. The best way is to just let people know you are willing to haul their sh*t and once you do a few and dont wreck anything haha they will always tell their friends. Works best with people who haul their horse and stock trailers with gassers because they do fine around town but most dont like to tow across the state.

Just dont make the mistake of hauling someone elses loaded trailer to canada with live animals...THAT was a 7 hours of inspection mistake :argh:

MotorOilMcCall 04-10-2010 09:48 AM

I haul horses, hay, and whatever else I can get in the GN Horse/Stock Combo. Mostly the east coast, but we go anywhere for the right price. Its a legit business, but its sort of a side gig to the farm, and making shavings. My truck also makes me money everyday getting me in and out of the woods.

I pull people out of the snow when we get a storm, and I rarely take payment. Most of the time I make them hook it, but if its a good looking woman... haha.

zach_west 04-11-2010 01:31 PM

I'll always helped someone out. i stopped by a guy the other day that blew his tranny bout 15 miles outside of liberal with a loaded horsetrailer on. i pulled him into town for free and all. then the only tranny we could find was in amarillo so i told him if he paid for fuel i'd go down and get it and come back to liberal. and then i drove back to amarillo. anything to help somebody else out ya know. and i haul hay any chance i get.:tu:

_hollywood 04-12-2010 09:49 AM

I was thinking of doing something along the lines of helping people move, like fill up the back of my truck, hook up whatever trailer you want and I will haul it for a certain price depending on mileage, alot cheaper than u-haul, just something to keep me busy on weekends etc.

has anybody done this before, what is a fair price? Is it worth it?

FarmDiesel 04-20-2010 01:09 PM

Only time I ever charged to pull someone out is when my cousin called me at 3:30 at night to go pull out his friend's 2wd half ton he was "mudding" with. :s:

As for actually pulling for a living, theres a auction barn around here that regularly hires people and their trucks to pull the auction's trailers. But, It always depends on who you know.
