pukie, how did he get around the rpm difference? a 53 series has a redline of 2500/2800, and well under 200 horsies.
how driveable is it?
i ask because i thought about putting one in a truck, but did not want to have something that topped out at like 45 mph, and took an hour to get up there....

It is all gearing. . . the 453t I have with the 5 speed OD trans. 3.73 rear gears and 33" tires top speed will be 85mph . . . with the Detroit being a 2 stroke acceleration is faster then diesels from the same era. . . 175hp with n55 injectors stepping up to n65 should get me just about 200hp. search them up on youtube this will show ya. . .

it sounds like you know what your doing! dont get me wrong when i question you-- its more about my learning curve than your engineering skills.
i just joined up yesterday, mainly for this type of swapping stuff. i have had both 4-53's and 6v-53's in various trucks/excavators...always liked the detroit scream.
i had thought about putting a 3 or 4-53 in a scout for a while, but figured it was too much work. the truck has a 4 speed direct, and i dont want to mod much more than the engine, so i punted.
who knows you might get me motivated.

ok, had to re-read this thread!
grumman, my first post was to pukie-- about that f-250. i can easily see swapping a detroit into a hostess truck! my specific questions were more at the pickup.

Actually it is going to be a tight squeeze to fit this in my van. . . no worries about questions we are all here to learn and the only stupid question is the one not asked. . . I found a gear ratio calculator on line to help me with the top speed with my van. . . sounds like some cool old equipment you have played with. . . I work full time at a sand pit am in charge of all the mulch production . . . boys and our toys . . . maybe you might keep your eyes open for an old detroit 53 series with a set of jakes for sale . . . I am on the hunt.
