05 common rail into 2000 f350!!!!!!!!
10 Attachment(s)
I started a cummins swap yesterday and thought you guys would like to follow along and give tips along the way. to start the truck it is going into is my boss's truck who is also the dad of my best friend! So i'm getting paid to play, what could be better. we have a fully equipped industrial electrical component fabrication shop. The truck that is under the knife is a 00 F350 7.3, zf6, 4x4 crew cab dually, sb dual disc, with a US Gear auxiliary trans. it has roughly 185k on it and tows around 30k lbs on a regular basis. and sometimes as far as from the shop in ohio to oregon, texas etc..... on the last trip the truck took to Utah it fried 3 cyl. because they guys driving didnt use double over and ran 85-90 all the way there unloaded and didnt back out of it in high elevations. so the result is IT'S GETTING A CUMMINS!!!!!! On Tues. the 05 common rail arrived at the shop. 100% complete minus the little things that they broke here and there. but a running engine regardless. we have decided to go for around 450 hp, because when you haul that much weight you can have too much power, i know that sounds stupid to some but it is a stick and there is no slip in the trans like an auto so you break stuff. to achieve 450 is easy from a common rail that is 325 from factory. we pulled the head, sent it out for a valve job, fire rings and all the goodies. the rest is staying stock and we are using a smarty. the stock turbo will stay on for now and be changed later as this is gonna cost big bucks just to start.
The engine was located in West Monroe LA. complete with everything, ready to run, 55k miles, out of a 2005 2wd quad cab long bed auto. basically it came from a grandpa truck! I pulled the head and found that the cross hatches were like the day it was made and the pistons were so clean that with a little wipe of a rag you could eat off of them. I called dodge with the truck vin and was told that it had been serviced by them and them only, even had a mopar oil filter on it when it came. the block was clean as could be and had little surface rust. The other mods going into the build are: deep sump oil pan, auxiliary trans cooler, veined rear end cover, and lots of gages to keep an eye on the beast. We are using the conversion parts from Destroked, and none of this would be possible without the help of Preble County Diesel Power (937) 452-5505. The common rail stuff is all new to me but we will figure it out! Here are some pics, our 25 ton engine hoist, the shyster, the engine as it arrived and was torn down for head work and paint Attachment 19233 Attachment 19234 Attachment 19235 Attachment 19236 Attachment 19237 Attachment 19238 Attachment 19239 Attachment 19240 Attachment 19241 Attachment 19242Attachment 19233 |

Ah what a cool project!
The wiring is somewhat challenging, but not all that bad. |
the wiring is gonna be a bear to trace everything down but im hopin its not too bad, i figured pullin that dead stroker out will be the hardest part since there are 2 more cyl int the way and more damn wires. im def gonna need some help with the wiring, the mechanical aspect is covered but wires tend to have a shocking experience along with them!

I've got a bunch of the schematics if you need anything

You just need to connect you're hydroboost line and that it, no vacuum lines to connect. I ended up using a Ford 6.0L powersteering pump because of clearance issues with my steering box. |
If you want to use the auto locking hubs (push button 4wd) you'll want vacuum, and the hvac I think needs vacuum, not 100% on that though. Does the commonrail have a vacuum pump?
|
Many SD trucks have an electric vacuum pump. Probably easier to retrofit one of those if the common rail doesn't have one.

thanks for the info, i looked around and found the vac. system. been a few slow days, waiting on parts, paint, weather, etc. i started tearing the ford apart today and was able to get it all but pulled in 8 hrs. the powerstroke is suspended by the crane waiting for the cab to be raised 6". the turbo had no play but there was oil everywhere in the inter cooler and the plumbing. so we are going to put new seals in it before we stick the turbo in the 97 f250 and swap the heads over to it as well. here's the pics, enjoy:jump:

ok so less progress than i thought. 6 hr safety class on thurs and all kinds of other crap slowing me down but i got most of the engine back together and it is a beauty. all the alum parts were painted with hillbilly chrome, and then cleared with a tad bit of blue pearl in it so they look freaking awesome. and the block and head were painted black base with a blue pearl top coat. ran into some issues getting parts but should all be in and running by friday. sorry for any delays but life happens. im in the middle of trying to sell my wifes cadi to fund my personal truck and today it got in a fight with a sawzall and lost a bed!

for all those following and future subscribers, im doing my best to keep this as crystal clear as possible, and with as many quality photos as i can. sometimes i have to take up to 5 pics to get the perfect one, im a perfectionist as you can tell. pay great attention to detail and wont settle for less than quality. at the end of the build i will have a pic of the truck and all the hands that have helped me here and there. one of the owner and his son and of me and the man behind the spray gun and another that goes by the name of mustang sally that has helped me turn a few wrenches. please ask any questions you want or point out mistakes or give tips cause we are all here to learn. I have decided that after this build i will be open to doing swaps for others if anyone is interested. i will be very reasonable and you will have a quality vehicle. i will only use parts from destroked cause they make high quality parts and are very helpful with questions and support. Preble county diesel will also be my other source for parts if you dont wish to purchase them though me. but i will be open for work this spring.

Looking really good. :tu: I wish I had that crane in my little 20x24 garage.
Try holding the camera really still as it looks like it was moving when you took a few of them. Also make sure the lens is clean and have good light when you take pics of dark things. Dam digital cameras. I use my HD2 phone for all my pics. |
im using my sprint evo 4g for the pics and thanks to a bad case of fibromyalgia, and early onset of MS i have a hard time but ill have my buddy take them next time:tu:

thanks for all the encouragement. i love when quality is appreciated. and Aggie, its ok, im 25 and have done alot of crazy things in my short life and can honestly say that the illnesses are keeping me alive. thanks to a good doctor in the area that has helped me exhaust all options and new treatments i can say im doing better. short term though, we have decided that a for now till the next new thing comes out im gonna be on narcotics and have been for almost a year. its all about genetics and how you treat your body when your young. ive, rodeoed, down hill mountain bike raced, been a full time farrier, horse trainer and have been welding and turning wrenches as far back as i can remember. so taking my time and enjoying what i do is what i focus on now. people say you are only young once and till you figure that out you are just spinning your wheels, no matter the wealth or lack of you can never truly enjoy it till you enjoy life. i have a wife 2 kids and an x that i am proud to say i do my best for everyday. your words of praise are inspirational to me and make me love what i do even more so thank you.
EAggie how far are you from cushing OK i used to build tanks on the tank farms there. and i love the f150. |

Im not but about 30 miles from there. Been through there a couple of times. I shadowed a Warren CAT salesperson and we visited some Cushing clients, and then I went through Cushing when I did 3 days of student teaching at drumright. |
LOL small world. ive built many tanks in cushing. and have some good friends in the 50 mile area. just hate the 3pm thunder storms and then the freaking heat and humidity after.
---AutoMerged DoublePost--- i worked for matrix for a while. love the eden area. great for horse riding and 4wheeling |

All the cummins engines are through the roof. You can't even buy a damn core for less than 1200 bucks! |
