Are you still using the D44 up front ?

I have the D44 up front in my 1500 gasser converted truck, and i am afraid to use the front axle because i'm afraid i will break it...

My 9,25" Chrysler has started to eat it self, i thought it was a D60 back there but that's a 9,25" and i don't expect it to live through the winter ;)

I have the Spicer 80 to put back there and a Spicer 60/70 for the front, just don't have the time or patience to swap these axles yet...

Glad i read through this thread though, seems like an awesome project...

The Bronco weighed 5100 lbs on my scale, so it's very light for a diesel vehicle. I have both stock axles for the time being. I believe a front axle u-joint would fail before the rest of the dana 44. I actually boost launched it once in 4wd low range on pavement, and nothing broke. Kind of scary, though, I didn't do it again. heh The truck hopped twice, and then hit 30 mph in about 1 second.

I have plans for some 8-lug 40 spline rear axles in the 9", I believe those are the strongest axles available for this housing. I like the ground clearance of the 9", and the fact that it's lightweight and strong, with unlimited aftermarket support, I will be sticking with it. The front end, I'm not sure yet, dana 61 maybe? Whatever it is, has to have 3.07s available.

5100lbs is VERY light... i thought my truck was light weighing in @ 5550lbs... (remember, i have yet to swap axles)

I'm thinking the 38" i'm planning for it will be more than enough to take it to the glacier...

Your truck is very cool, do you have recent pics of it ? did you have any paintwork done ?

American Thunder 11-23-2012 01:52 AM

Those vids I posted were recorded last week. No new paint yet, finances don't permit unfortunately.

Well, paint don't matter when you have a Cummins in it ;)

Paint is on a low priority, honestly. The body needs a lot of work, such as the floors looking pin holed and so on. I want to repair it properly, and do full quarter replacements. I even have a body shop owner that really wants to get his hands on the truck and do the work. At first, I wanted a battleship camo scheme on it, but the red with white top is growing on me, so I might end up having it sprayed the factory colors. That blood red would look pretty cool..

The chassis is pretty much completely rebuilt from end to end, and in great shape.

awesome pics. I have a 79 bronco that I want to do the same thing to. I was thinking of using a 90-93 4x4 trans and transfercase on it.

Sorry about dragging out an old thread, new to the board, but just had a couple questions for the guys who have made the cummins: 1975-9 era ford swaps. If there is a better place for this, please let me know.

Has anyone used any of the 'kits' sold by DieselConversion.com or the like? Are they pretty decent?

I am hoping to mate the 12valve to a ZF5speed and married tcase. Sounds like things get pulled back quite a bit to make this work, is there issues with shifter locations?

Finally, when it comes to inter-cooler mounting, is it more common in front or behind the existing rad?

Again I appreciate any help, and apologize if this is not the right place...

Fordcummins.com and diesel conversions are the same company.. There is destroked, but I didnt like their attitude and help with questions,And their prices seemed too high. If you read what I posted up I used the 727 with an advanced adapters ,adapter. Im not saying to do what I did. But you may find the adapter there for the engine to trans if you need one. You have to look around and see if anyone else somewhere did this..I was all over filling my head with info, looking at pics, asking questions, ect. The bad part is that after I have done all this work,I am planning to maybe sell the truck to buy something newer. I must be getting old or something,And ill be 35 in July, haha. Its definitely a great conversion, and im happy with it,except my 4.56s are just a little too low for the highway, turning the 40s I have..The diesel doesnt need all that low gearing. Im just about done with putting money out and dont feel like re-gearing the axles, hence,I might plan on putting it up for sale...Anyway look around, make calls and find ALL the info you require before you start this..It isnt just drop it in and go...:tu:

Mike,

Thanks for the response! I am definitely just in the planning stages right now... so trying to suck up as much information as I can to reduce the surprises along the way. Did you build your own engine mounts or buy someones? I would be ending up with 410gears and 35s so I might end up tangling with gears as well...
