UH-forgot a few more pictures of the bed frame.going to get the rear hinge pivots on there, then mount it all up and see where the frame to chassis braces need to go.
im going to build myself a heavy mobile gantry too-5 tonne should hold it.:pca1:

Diesel Powered Rocket 04-04-2011 08:32 AM

Hey PJ,
Looks like you have made some good progress. :tu: The workshop looks to be very well equipped, I only saw one thing that was missing and would be considered a local law violation around here.......NO BEER FRIDGE :scare2:

beerbellykelly 04-04-2011 03:24 PM

ha ha ,i had a beer fridge in the shed like 20 years ago,but all my pals would come by and clean it out, plus i spend WAY TOO much time in my shed as it is , if there was beer too , hell , i,d have to just sell the house and live in the shed......hey, wait a minute :humm:

got the hinge pieces welded up today , not much to look at but it,s a build diary, and i built these-so it,s in .:w2:

got some done-off to ireland to drink beer and ride aged vee twins-so more later-

hung the hinge pieces onto the chassis pintle,s-:w2:

finnished milling the slots in the engine mounting blocks-

turned the flats for the end of the tipper hinge pieces-

got the welding done on these too-

cut the PTO prop, and set the yoke up in my lathe - nice to see the trusted and familiar name of SPICER on these props-:c:

Diesel Powered Rocket 04-13-2011 07:08 AM

That's a good idea using the lifting eye mounts for the bed pivot points. :tu: Are you going to build a scissor style lift for the bed?

beerbellykelly 04-22-2011 04:58 PM

6 Attachment(s)
hi bert, i will look into that-most likely be whatever is going cheap at the wreckers yard.

got back from riding old indians around ireland-

found some 50mm box section steel,4mm wall,i was suprised to see that the motor wanted to raise this much, gives me a flat and level drive drive flange on the trans, also looks to have solved the steering/panhard clearance issues,we,ll see later.i will have to buy some more box section steel to make the raiser blocks into a stronger cross member type mount.

shimmed the rear bed up on timber bearers, old wheels, beer barrels, anything.

got the frame under the bed-

fitted the hinges and measured and marked everything up-

hope to get time to weld it all up tomorrow, but the sun is blazing here and the beer beckons......:humm:

Diesel Powered Rocket 04-25-2011 03:32 PM

The engine position looks allot better now. :rocking:

im trying to contain my excitement at the TWO trucks i found in ireland---i really need to get this one moved on a whole lot before i even think about the TWO sexy giant 6x4 SCAMMELLS i found.:choochoo:

getting some more fab done tomorrow i hope.

few shots of the next jobs im squaring up-

some detail of the transmission crossmember-it,s made for off road service so it,s tough and incorporates a shock absorber fixed to the underside of the trans,i will reuse this-

you can see where we plasma cut the crossmember to allow the trans to sit level-

i will fabricate a heavy .25 inch thick top section to weld back into the cut section-i am also considering another crossmember right behind this one,as this will be a heavily stressed area-

i will fit a heavy plate that bolts between the crossmember and the trans isolator-and the other [possible] new cross member-

you can see the clearance has improved at the front sump/axle/steering/panhard area:hellox:

first-CONGRATS USA ON WASTING THAT RAT BIN LARDON-made my year!!

right-

cut and turned a load of parts and prepped for tack welding-

got the plinth,s done-these will support the hinge pieces, and be welded onto the frame that supports the bed-

set the rest of the jobs out on the surface plate-

tack welded and fixed up with the carver clamps-

got one hinge/pivot done-aim to get the rest done tomorrow

got a line on some tipper gear-a 12 volt hydraulic scissor type,be a couple of weeks before the guy has done with it,but im plaguing him daily....:bat:

Diesel Powered Rocket 05-05-2011 10:35 AM

First: I agree. :tu:

PJ, Looks like you have made some good headway on the truck. I have used the 12 volt tipper setup on a few different 1 yard dumptrucks, works out allot easier than HYD lines and engine driven pumps. :c:

beerbellykelly 05-05-2011 04:33 PM

for sure, i looked at making a scissor type lift and powering it with 1 or two jacks, then having a priority valve from the PTO to divert between the winch and the tipper gear,a self contained 12 volt unit became available so i said 'F.T.':hellox:
i did around 10 hours fab on the hinges,i got so hyper with the TIG that the torch gas cap siezed into the torch,i have a spare, bigger torch set up for ally, but it,s a major $ set back.
we got our first local hot rod/military/biker show at the pub end of this month,so as one of the organisers it,s a bit hectic, plus im still dealing with registering my new truck,it,s a major PITA as the local vehicle office is rammed with non english speaking DIMLOWS holding up the lines.:bat:
i,ll get through this cr#p tomorrow i hope :choochoo:

Diesel Powered Rocket 05-09-2011 03:49 PM

I bought a MILLER 1-A cooling radiator and torch after I wrecked a couple of uncooled TIG torches.

Did you get the other truck registered?

hillbilly pulled the motor outta my spares truck-

tack welded the hinges to tipper frame-

turned up a turbo cold side adaptor to hook into the ram cool air intake-

took some advice from an internationally renowned expert-and fitted a beer fridge-:jump:

had a good day-the sun was out early,so i got the truck bed strapped to the forklift, now i can lift it single handed-

lifted body off and set on tressles-

with the help of dave the rave who turned up to drink my beer,we got the bed squared up with the grinder and ratchet straps and the cut rear section aligned correctly with the main part of the bed-

then drill tech screwed the two together, this pulled the joints in closer-

cut a lump of timber to press & hold the two pieces together-

tack welded and ran a seam across half the bed.

finnish welded the rear frame and test fitted-

it tips smoothly-im happy-thanks to berts beer fridge advice:jump:

PJ,
I'm glad to see that your workshop is now in compliance with the beer fridge. I also like that you put it up high enough that your shorter mates will have to ask for another rather than just help themselves. :c: I might have to book a trip, just to check that the beer is properly chilled. :w2:
That's a good looking Belgian Shepard. Those are very smart dogs and very loyal. I like the idea of a black dog because it's more of a surprise to intruders at night. I have a 84 pound Black Lab that watches and hears everything on my property.

Good progress on the truck, don't forget a couple of dense Polyurethane bumpers under the front of the tipper bed, otherwise the empty bed will rattle and drive you nuts.

-i just found out-United States Navy SEALs used a Belgian Malinois war dog named Cairo in Operation Neptune Spear, in which Osama bin Laden was killed-good puppy.

-sound advice ,as ever,i have a strip of reinforced rubber type matting i was going to use to deaden the rattles.
collecting fresh bottle of argo-shield for the MIG tomorrow a.m.

I think you need to stop driving your Leyland DAF around and get back to some welding here.:w2:

THE HYDRAULIC TIPPER REAR END JOB WAS GOING NOWHERE-:scare2:

so i chopped the ends off the two props [PTO,main drive]-and machined the u-jay saddles back to the mounting spigots-

machined the two cut ends mounted them and measured the new prop lengths [with the sliding joint halfway out]

then cut the props to length and heated the ends to allow the u-jay saddles to be pressed in-

test fitted the two short ,stubby little props-

i also heated the gear shifter hand lever and put a bend in it to allow me to shift the truck, this will require more work when the seat is re-fitted-

having the props laid up temporary will allow me to build my prop tunnel and plan where all the controls will sit-:rocking:

glad to be getting some done:jump:

Diesel Powered Rocket 07-12-2011 07:57 AM

Hey PJ,
Maybe I shouldn't of suggested the beer fridge for the shop.
Do you want me to mail a padlock and hasp but no key for the fridge, so that you can get back on track with this project? :bat:

What have you been doing brother?

beerbellykelly 08-01-2011 10:46 AM

hi bert, been out of the country, injured my back, got better, made a good bit of progress, will get back in with the pictures when i get back home.

PJ,
Wow, sorry to hear that you hurt your back. I hope you are doing better. It's been too hot and humid here to work on my truck for the last couple of weeks.

How did you hurt your back? :humm:
If you did it picking up fat chicks you should know better. :tttt:

no fat chicks in my stable mate.:jump:
did it humping parts and machione tools-i wrecked the spine years ago moto-x/road racing and skateboarding...all in the name of fun.:tu:
went to race lusty old brit bikes in france-great trip.
then to chill in tenerife for my birthday-this was where i hurt my back again-less said about drunken fun the better.

cut some restraints to stop the props climbing through the thin floor if they ever let go-
started mocking up the cold side ram air feed to turbo-
made some restraints to prevent engine from entering cab in case of upside down time or front or reat impact-
the props covers were made from a c02 bottle-suitably hacked and welded-

beerbellykelly 08-08-2011 02:37 PM

3 Attachment(s)
the cold side air feed will have the first 2 foot made in stainless or wrapped in kevlar ,as it sits fairly close to the end of the exhaust manifold-

initially i planned to run the exhaust out the bonnet like a puller truck, and i will be doing it this way,but i have run the cold air over to the other side-so if i do need to go sensible on the exhaust -i have the room.

here is the pedal box from the unimog-its going in the dodge.

beerbellykelly 08-08-2011 02:44 PM

here,s one of my engine restraints mounting points-4.5 tonne steel hawser,0.5 inch plate to reinforce chassis-

check out the 0.75 inch chassis rails-no quitting there.

Diesel Powered Rocket 08-10-2011 03:19 PM

PJ,
It's great to see that your back at it. I was only kidding about the fat chicks. Happy Birthday brother. :c: I bet vacation in the Canary Islands was great.

Those are a couple a great looking bikes in post #104. In post #106 the forth picture, is that a new cylinder for the tipper?

The gas cylinder makes a great scatter shield for the propeller shafts. That is some excellent looking fab work. I've used the cable tie down method before on a GM 454 LS6, it had a tendency to break engine mounts shifting to 3rd gear.

beerbellykelly 08-11-2011 05:20 PM

thanks bert, racing the old brits at over 120mph was a gas-until it rained.:w2:

the big ram is from a caterpillar, and is way over the top,the tipper is proving to be uber tough to get the right parts-i think i have the right guy on the job now.

also i finally found some fat wheels and tyres for sensible money-it,s a 600 mile drive, but it,s to scotland, where i have a few mates, and will come home with some good grog.i will be paing less for 5 wheels and tyres than the damn frenchman wanted for one-:tttt:

will be quiet for a few days as im gathering parts and no internet while im nomad...thanks for the support-it helps get urrr done:tu:

few jobs-dash stripped,cleaned painted-done with.

made some brackets to allow fitting off road tyres to my welding trolley,im building a car port outback,so i can work through the winter on this truck.

not done a thing mate-been building rods and doing shows-great picture of the hound dog by the way,superb!-
got lots of work lined up on the truck, but still no tipper ram, still no stainless bends for the cold side-it,s just time i guess,im just not paying the prices these dreamers think stuff is worth, good news is the fat wheels arrive next few weeks-searching for cheap 12.50x20,s if you see any around.

chopped the handbrake to clear the gear shift-weld this up tomorrow-

was at the hot rod super nationals and saw this beautiful coronet-my favourite mopar muscle car, while walking round in a mopar haze i spotted some dodge rear lights-three lenses and two lights complete-been looking all over for these-guy took like 10 bucks off me-well happy-another part i dont need to make/find-GREAT!

will be back in a while with a load of photos when i get some more progress...

Nice pictures of the car show, I had to take a second look at the second carshow picture...I would of never guessed that you would find the General Lee at a car show overseas. :humm:

welcome back mate-hope the vacation was good.the super nationals were busy lots of primo mopars-nothing like as big as the show in the us,but some top shelf cars-here,s one of ours-next frame below

got a load of parts arriving for the DODGEYMOG-nothing bar the wheels are bolt on -still months of fab work yet,but i love it-

at last i got my ram and made the bottom pivot mounts.

line bored these on lathe to accept 1-00" hardened pins.

ram will have to be mounted 2-00" off centre-i hope this wont cause me problems??.it will never be used to tip much weight.

cut out the cross members and some gusseting for the tipper frame, hope to do the welding tomorrow-i will not miss tripping over this hunk of steel contraptioning-which has slowly got heavier and more annying as time goes on.
got some more bracing to cut for the tipper frame and desighn the rear bed landing posts, including some urethane pads to keep it quiet.once i get this mess layed up and working right,it,s paint and the rear bed can go on.then i,ll have somewhere to throw all the parts of this truck that i have been climbing over and endlessly moving around my tiny workshop-

i am collecting my 12.50 x 20 flavoured wheels next week-this has been a year and a half mission, also i have cut a nice deal with a local guy [ who has supplied me with used military tyres for decades ]- for five used michelin XZL,s-but no rush for these.so i can direct money at the other end of the truck.

this winter i plan on stripping each wheel station in turn and getting everything right.more pictures soon.

cheers.

Looks like it's right out of a MAD MAX movie. I love the way you blacked out the engine parts.
How and where did you hide the radiator, or is this only a strip car? I need to see more pictures of that ride inside and out. Did you shoot any youtube videos of it?

busy few days-

layed up the ram and settled on a position to mount it ,subject to a dry run under power.

roughed out the top mounts for the ram and finnish bored to size for the hardened steel pins.

measured a lot and drew up up a cutting list for the bottom braces to give the tipper frame some torsional rigidity.

my favourite tee shirt-it has upset a lot of self rightous a-holes:c:

did a lot of TIG welding ,there must be over 300 seams in this frame alone-it,s all good practice-im getting there.

well it,s 20:10 here and i just got the frame finnished enough to rig it all up tomorrow,i plan to test fit a mounting plate to the top mount so- i can move it about till im 100% with it.
still got to get the pump hooked up etc-my back is in pain-off to get it rubbed.
