Default Conversion?

Hey yal I kinda need some pointers from of yal. I have a 90 f-250 extra cab 2x4 witht the 460 gas hog and E-4OD fully re-built. I was givin a 6.9 but I haven't picked it up I know it needs a rebuild. Well I love my truck to death it is mechanicaly soild and has many up grades besides the engine. I was thinkin of re-building that 6.9 and throwing it in there I know evertyhing will mount up but while I'm doing it I would like to go to the junk yard and find me a Dana 60 and get rid of the stupid IFS and find a transfer case. My dad said it would be alot of money but I just love my truck and I see alot of people on here that do conversions. I would like to know how much (ABOUT) the 60 swap and transfer case would be. I will sell the my 460 engine that runs perfect and the IFS to help recover my costs. I already no how much it would cost are shop to rebuild the 6.9 but not sure about the 60 and the T-case. Can yal kinda help me out I would really apperciate it. I would probily be doing it after my school ends during this summer if I can talk my pa into it. any advice will be thanked

Average Dana 60 price is usually around $1250. It depends alot on where you are and who is selling it.

Luckily (and unluckily) you have a 2 wheel drive, so you don't really care what spring pad width axle to get since you have to make up brackets anyway. The Ford 78-79 kingpin 60's have a narrower pad to pad width than the 80's model D60's, and a balljoint D60 from a 90's model Ford will work well also. Avoid the later 90's model F-250 Dana 50's though...only in an aftermarket perspective.

As for the transfer case...it depends on what transmission you are going to use and if you can find one with a transfer case already on it. T-cases can generally be picked up pretty cheap, but watch out on the aluminum cases because they have a tendency for stretched chains and broken lubrication pumps, which can trash your case pretty quick (I've killed two of the 13-56's that way).

And as for the 6.9 rebuild...THAT'S what is going to kill your budget. The CHEAPEST rebuild kit that I have personally found was $4500. And that's not including the fuel system rebuild price

All in all, it will be a fun little...although not so little...project. I'd say go for it! However, in my opinion...I'd look around for a diesel F-350 4x4 with a trashed body, and then just go from there...then you'll have all the parts you need.

Good luck!

I was thinkin about the late 70's model dana 60's. I would mind having a 99 and up 450 dana 80 but thats dreamin

That will be one thing I'll look for in my conversion

$4500 dollars thats alot. We own a machine shop and I can get rebuild kits from our suppiler EPWI( Engine parts werehouse inc.) for about $2600 and I don't get charged for running the shops equipment or anything so I'll save money there

I agree with you I'll keep checkin on craigslist and threw my friends and if I don't I'll just convert mine so far this conversion is just in my basket of idea's
Good luck!
Thank you for all your help bud

by the time you find an axle (about 1,000 bucks), you buy springs, do the wheel bearings and brakes on the front axle (you should to be safe), and pay for legit steering and everything your looking as a couple grand just to straight axle it. not including transmission and transfer case, drivelines etc. and also, GOOD LUCK finding a HP d60 at a wrecking yard. thats like hitting a gold mine underground randomly.

like said before, itll be ten times easier and cheaper just to go buy a f350. and if it were me, i would never spend the money to drop a 6.9l in my truck, if your going to do all the work, at least put a 7.3 in there the 6.9's are pretty weak

Rumor has it that when it comes to the Navistar IDI's, an engine plagued with cavitation problems, the thicker bore webs of the 6.9 tend to cavitate less. And the same power can be made with a 6.9 if you tune the pump, put a set of Stage 1 or E/G code injectors in it, tune the pump and add a charger. A solid 250hp is capable out of a 6.9 (properly done, mind you)...and if it's anything like the IDI's I've owned in the past, you can pretty much run the crap out of it day in and day out. Just my two cents though...

It's a matter of preference really... The 12 valve conversion is a tried and true classic, and if you really want to do any work with the truck, that's the way to go. However, if you just want an old rattle box with that addicting diesel flavor to it, then the possibilities are really endless and it basically comes down to whatever you can get a hold of and are comfortable working with. Each platform has it's pros and cons...do what you are comfortable with and what makes you smile every time you hop in and mash the throttle.

Me personally...I still have an itch to make a badass IDI...mainly for the challange. But, I'll stick with my Fummins for now.
