How are you getting past DEQ to get it registered? Are they not using the OBD on emissions?

what states require testing I know here there are no testing or maybe the list would be shorter if I asked which do not require testing

Oregon does for most cars. Not sure about the age cutoff or diesels. I know commercial diesel trucks they don't care. My 71 Opel is old enough that they don't. DEQ is a racket in Portland.

In WA they don't test anything 25yrs and older, if it is newer they just test it as a diesel.

Well I just got back from another road trip and managed to get 30.73 mpg on a 252 mi leg! The IP swap/timing bump mad all the difference! Before it seemed like the motor was struggling to maintain freeway speeds, with my foot burried. Now it seems effortless, plus the water temp is lower. I have discovered that the boost guage is a good indicator of fuel efficiency. If I can keep my foot out of it an keep the boost below 7lbs, it gets the best mpg. Boost levels above that knock the mpg's down to 26 mpg. Still not bad for a jacked up 4x4. Speeds above 65 also hurt the mpg, so I have found the "sweet" spot for my rig with the tires I am running now to be 60-65 mph to get the best mpg. Anything faster requires more fuel to maintain. O, btw this was the exact same road trip as before.

FTE - what's the overdrive gear ratio in a 700R4? Do you have a tach as it would be interesting to know if the mileage sweet spot you've found is RPM related or resistance. Do you think similar results could be expected at say 70-75 with different gearing or tire height?

0.70. I don't have a tac, but I think the sweet spot is a combination between rpm and wind resistance. I have found that my rig is very sensitive to the gorge winds. If there is any head wind, maintaining 65 and over is sucking the fuel, but if I drop down to 55-60 with the head wind, it doesn't take alot of throttle. I think a more areodynamic rig would solve this, even a Cherokee not jacked up would do better. If I am not bucking a head wind, it will cruise 70+ no problem, and sip fuel, but it is at the top of the sweet spot. The only time I have made this trip up the gorge with zero wind was last time one way, the return trip not so lucky(white caps on the river and swells large enough to surf on, not kidding I was surfing on waves that size in Hawaii last month!) and the mileage suffered, but still mid 20's.
What are you putting it in? Remember I am running 4x4 with mud tires, so a 2wd lower to the ground will result in better mpg's. The only thing I would change on mine is the tires, maybe go with 29's and a street tread to get the mpg's up, but the offroad would suffer.

Yeah, its running good, and I replaced the oil seal around the gear selector shaft - where it was POURING tranny fluid. I also got a gasket to go between the tranny and transfer case - where it is STILL leaking a fair amount of tranny fluid.

I need to split the tranny/transfer case and install that gasket, and then finish cleaning up and putting the interior back together.

I came down with a case of pneumonia about 5-6 weeks ago. That took over a month to get over. Then I went to Moab for vacation over spring break. Now I'm just waiting for a dry weekend day to finish up with the tranny work. Thank God for DST - I'm finally able to get home from work and still have an hour or two of daylight to do some stuff around here.

BTW, FTE, did you get my email reply about the wheels?

I had the same leak with my transfer case, could not find a gasket, so just used silicone. So far no leaks. Just found the email, no prob just wanted to know if you still wanted them, I'll set them aside.
