Today was a GREAT DAY!!!! Got the Cherokee out on it's first drive, only a few issues to take care of. I have an oil leak I finally tracked down, the hard oil line for the turbo behind the head has a crack that only leaks at higher rpm. I thought it was leaking at the valve cover, so I replaced the gasket when I did the valve adj. No leaks at idle but when I returned from the drive oil everywhere, took a while to figure out! Now I know why the turbo needs a rebuild. Everything else works real nice, steering is excellent, ride is a little stiffer than stock but feels better to me (stock was a bit mushy imo) The trans shifts great, no vibrations from the adapter. Still need to finish the glow plug relay wiring and kill solonoid. Life is good!

These may work for some swaps--prior to the w123 wierd motor arms many benz's had these type---like the 207,209 307 ,307 d trucks had. straight out arms with big rubber donuts under--and many have places to use the engine shocks like these, depending on which model they come in various lengths and some -like a 58 pontoon angle up a little like plane wings when viewed from the front Im gonna use them when i stick the motor in a 30's gm truck

Ya those were the same type that were on my engine, but wouldn't work with my application. The benz brackets were not only too wide, but put the rubber mount too low and interfered with the upper control arms. Also the stock benz mounts don't hold up to the stress of wheeling. I don't see any drawbacks from the mounts I used, plus they will take the abuse.BTW I like your GMC, what are your plans?

A little setback today, so I got the oil line to the turbo fixed and finally no more engine oil leaks!! Now the setback, the trans is leaking! I took it for a long bomb around the neighborhood and onto a side road, got the jeep up to 45-50 or so, sweet!!! Got back to the house and cheched for leaks and discovered trans fluid! It appears that the seal at the front of the transfer case is bad allowing fluid from the trans into the t-case, and puking out the vent, drat! Other than that the ride was great, the jeep ripps around quite well, still need to get out on the freeway and put it to the test. Got to get a turbo rebuild kit, getting a little blue smoke now and then.

Well, I fixed all the oil leaks and found a deal on some 30in mud tires! It sure made quite an improvement on how it drives now. I still need to get it insured, so I haven't gotten it on the freeway yet.

So, when you gonna' be ready to come collect on that dinner I owe you? In the last 5 weeks I haven't done a thing to mine, so you're obviously WAY in the lead on finishing first.

I have finished some other good stuff in the last 5 weeks though. Did a full body armor job on my 4-wheelin Cherokee (96 Sport). Took it out wheeling two weekends (one was a full weekend-long camping trip), made an 8-day whirlwind trip to Alaska to visit all 8 of my company's facilities there, and then spent last weekend doing a bunch of small maintenance jobs on my wheelin Jeep, tow rig, MB, and my wife's DD Grand Cherokee (oil changes, t-stat, prepping for and passing emissions testing, getting the wheeler ready for a 600 mile road trip to Spokane, etc.).

I'm finally ready to get back to work on my diesel XJ project tomorrow morning. I still need to do all the wiring, plumb the vacuum system (for the heater, brakes, and axle engagment systems), install the oil cooler & lines, install the radiator & cooling fan, install the shifters, install the t-case, measure for (and if necessary modify) the drivelines.

I'll be happy if I can get it on the road before the end of summer. So, if you're ready for a road trip to Seattle before then - you win...

Well the jeep has been down for a few weeks for new injectors. I orderd new monark tips, got them a few days ago so I just need some time to get them installed and pop tested. So far I have put around 200 miles on it, other than the injectors, no problems! Going on vacation plus all the busy summer stuff leaves little time for the jeep, but hope to get all the loose ends tied up soon!

Default Good news/Bad news

Well I got the new injector tips installed and pop tested and back in the motor, quite an inprovement! It starts, idles and runs alot smoother with more power, plus fuel mileage increased. Before the injectors I was getting @ 20 mixed, now 25 mixed. Now the bad, the noise I thought was injector "nailing" appears to be piston slap or a wrist pin in #5. Compression is down 100lbs compaired to the others at 380lbs. I think the prevoius owner must have run low on oil due to the turbo oil feed line leak. Now I am looking for another motor. At least I don't have too much $ tied up in this , the motor cost me nothing after parting out the car and scrap. Hopefully with a good motor the fuel mileage will even be better!

If its just piston slap or wrist pin noise then a single piston swap would probably be the easiest and cheapest solution. There is always the possibility that its a big end rod bearing. in that case, fixing the bearing would also be pretty cheap and easy - as long as it hasn't gotten bad enough to require work on the crank. If you want to go that route I have a spare engine with a couple of bad bearings on #2 & #4 that you could get parts from...

Thanks, good to know. I am thinking it might just be easyer/cheeper to just get another good motor and swap out. That will get me back on the road sooner, then I will pull this motor apart and see whats up. Maybe it will be fixable for the next build! Or just spare parts. For now it will sit, got alot of things to get done before the rain sets in.
