87 jeep wrangler (617 coversion)

I used jeep flywheel and adapted it to mercedes crank.I don't know if that flywheel is zero balanced or not.maybe i lucked out,i dont know, but 1 year later i dont have any trouble at all and i use my jeep daily.Everybody has their own opinions on this but if i was to build another one i would do the same thing again.

Wow this sounds great! what did you have to do to the flywheel? have you heard of any vw 1.9 diesel's in jeeps? We are working on one now. we purchased a acme adapter, bell housing from toyota 4x4 trans. told toyota bell housing will bolt up to ax5 trans. some input shafts will work, some wont. did you have any problems with your imput shaft? can you post photos of your motor mounts? thanks!

I'm getting ready to start a similar project. I bought a 82 300sd for $100. My dad gave me if I want it a 81 CJ7. It has been sitting for about 15yrs. The body is in good shape but everything else will need replaced. I might be better off with a already running Jeep. I also was thinking about a Jeep Commanche Truck. I am pulling the Mercedes engine and all of the accessories today.

If your jeep has a t18 you can use a ford input shaft (i used a frod trans i assume the shaft will swap) turn down the bearing retainer and bore out the mercedes bellhousing and bolt it together not plates. Use a 4cyl 200 220 or 240 bellhousing flywheel and clutch. Use ford pilot bushing and everything slides together. You have to use a hyd throwout bearing I had my bearing retainer turned down to chevy size and used a howe bearing for a stock clutch. The only way to use the 5cyl is to lift it or set the motor way to high to clear the front diff. Tne 4cyl fits perfect behind the front axle.

I'm not trying to hijack this thread but maybe bump it. I didn't get the Mercedes engine out today but did get the car cut up and ready to scrap after I pull the engine.
rab475 thanks for the help but I don't think I want to mess with the CJ7. It needs a top, new wiring, brake and fuel lines, ect. A buddy offered to sell me a 89 Wrangler 6 cylinder for $100. It does run but has some rust and needs a radiator. the bad is it's an automatic and I really want a 5 speed. Will an AX 415 bolt up to this 89 Jeep's T-Case?

the right nv4500
Imm scoping out nv4500s and got a question which one the early chevy or the later one. For driving around -not necessarily off road would the early low gear one be too much of a span for a truck like the size of a fusso-or a tiltmaster?
I guess the way i should ask is-- if you had a truck with 2wd and 4.11 rear gears and 32"or 33" tires and a turbo 617, which would you
go with to get the thing going from a start-- if you could bolt up a nv?
lets say the truck weighs 4800 LBs empty and would be sometimes moderately loaded and might have a dana 60 3/4 ton front axle and a np 205 transfer case that could be swapped in if off road utility is wanted.
Gearing: 6.34, 3.44, 1.71, 1, .73, R 6.34 or,
5.61, 3.04, 1.67, 1, .74, R 5.61

other words-- would the later 5:61 be better or would I need the 6:34 to use gearing because of the lack of power to get going and whats the chance of even seeing 5th on the hwy with 32' or 33" tires?

vlado,
Great looking conversion. I converted my 1968 Bronco with an 86 OM617-love it and love the MPG improvement. I'm working a tach issue that I just can't solve and am wondering if you figured out how to wire the tach up. I've tried an inductive pickup from the alternator (W terminal doesn't work for my alternator). I did notice what looked to be a pickup on the front crank pulley...will see if I can get some output. Other than that, I'm scratching my head because I need to change my differential ratio as well...need a tach to do it properly. Any ideas?

FWIW, the flywheel on the 617 is zero balanced; I used a 240 flywheel and had it zerobalanced. Spline pattern on my NV3550 is almost the same...had to use a bit of nail filing on the mercedes clutch plate to get it to fit nicely. Works great, holds great. Have almost 500 miles on the conversion.
