1994 F-150 4x2 Automatic Transmission
Hiya there bombers!
I was wondering which Cummins diesel engine would be possible to install in a 1994 F-150 4x2 with automatic transmission, in order to replace it's original Ford V8 5.0l Gasoline engine.
By the way, I'd love to keep the automatic transmission and the 1.5 ton capability. Would that be possible with a new diesel engine? Which one would let me keep both things?

I don't know much about the Ford frames but as far as an almost direct bolt in why not use a 7.3L? It would be far easier to adapt any wiring/modules into what you have to get it to work. I'm sure some serious suspension upgrading would be in order but that should be all bolt on.
Either that or a 4BT. They're still pretty heavy though.

I would go with a 94-98 Second gen cummins motor. The 91-93 models would be the same amount of work, for less power. In 94, they changed injector pumps to what's known as the "P-Pump" which is capable of pushing more fuel than the "VE Pump" that's found on the earlier models.
As far as transmission options...I'm pretty sure you could get an adapter plate and torque converter to keep your stock tranny...the problem there is that it's not built to handle the low end torque of the diesel. I'd look into either using a powerstroke tranny, or you could use a dodge tranny out of whatever donor vehicle you get the motor from.
The 4BT out of a bread truck would also be a good choice if you're not trying to build a power house. Everything is pretty much the same as the 6BT swap, but there's 2 more cylinders. The tranny options would also be the same. A lot of the bread trucks, however, have the 4L80-E. A very good transmission, but it's all electronic and you would also need the computer to run it. I'm not sure how the bread trucks are wired up, but I do know for sure that there's a stand-alone unit you can get to control the shifting based off of TPS readings.

Well, thank you all for replying and for your concern. Well, actually, I've been doing some research lately and found out that, as Johnny Cetane suggests, the best choice would be a remanufactured Navistar 7.3l IDI Turbo. This engine was released in 1994 and it's a drop in for F-Series trucks, so the wiring thing should be no problem. I would also have to get a torque converter for my E40D auto tranny, and yes, serious suspension upgrade as well...this makes me think about if I'd rather get a 1994 F-150 4x4 with auto tranny, sure it'd have a stronger suspension.

L O steelhelmet here is a non cummins thought: M/B 617 5 cyl TD & trans eng 600lbs 120 hp no electronics [vac shut down] old style 4sp auto [rear pump] can be push or pull started. not exotic or 500hp, is lo budget. glitch? front sump oil pan also eng. is long & tall . Im in planning stage figgering out solutions for probs that I can see that are bound to show up anytime 1 does this style retrofit + the 1s that show up during build.looking to use a mopar 1500 or dak less frnt saddle mods then ford or gm regards bg
