Cummins 12V in my Chevy 1983 C30
Hello guy!
Recently, I have bough an COMPLETE 1990 Ramcharger D350 with a Cummins, 5 speeds. I want swap all is mecanic in my Chevy.
But for now, I'm looking for information and advice to help me.
My C30 2x4 have an slow stock 6.2. Recently I have found 3 cracks in the engine block on the passager side. I have already do a lot of work on this truck on the drivetrain:
- New rear brake, drum, show, spring, parking cable, wheel cylinder, hoses
- New rear wheel bearing on both side
- New clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing, release bearing
- New 6.5 swap starter
- New engine oil pan gasket to.
- New power steering pump with all new steering and hydro-boost brake hose
I refreshed transmission and diff oils, rework front brakes...
So, now I will go with a Cummins 12V and need advice from guys who do this swap before.
Let me know if it already have an subject here that can help me.
The exact project is: swap 12V CUmmins with Getrag 2x4 in a dually C30 (2x4) 1983 DUMP TRUCK. The Getrag is good enough for my use... but need synchro on third... and new shim...
- No A/C installation
- don't need to follow federal restriction, we don't have any control here.
For now,
What I know:
1. I can re-use my chevy power steering reservoir directly on the dodge one.
2. I know existe engine mount for this swap on internet
3. I know I have to short or lenght the driveshaft and relocate the transmission member
What I need to know:
1. will I need body lift to fit this engine?
2. will I need modify frame somewhere?
3. will I need re-enforce front suspension? I know there some weigth difference between Cummins and 6.2
What I absolutely have to do:
1. Fix the KDP (killer dowel pin)!!!

Body lift helps (from what I've heard). At least you only have you do the cab (not the dump). I had 2" body lift in a crewcab like yours, and I liked the result.

The Chevy 1-ton suspension and frame is stronger than the Dodge. You may want heavier coil springs, but I would try what you have first.

I think you right. 2'' body lift could look better. I will consider this. Anyway, I project to paint the cab, so remove it. It will be a good moment to lift it.
About front suspension and frame, it's a good think to know that chevy one are stronger then I aspect. I will try with the original coil spring. If it doesnt work, I will try with a pair on AIR SHOCK that I sell at NAPA auto part.
Do you have a picture of your truck with 2'' lift?
