Kubota Ranger - Oregon

Thought I would join the fun and start posting about the conversion I'm doing too. It should be fun to see DetroitDiesel's build and mine progress.

I picked up a V2203 DI from Rangmar about 6mo ago and have finally got the rig and parts to start putting it together. I have most of the parts already, included a K03 turbo and an NPR alternator with the built in vacuum pump.
http://s102.photobucket.com/user/flyinmonkeys32/media/20140326_175348_zps288df360.jpg.html
I'm starting with a 2000 Ranger. Saw it on my way home from work one day... turned out to be a repo for a really good price. The truck was a 3.0l 4x4 5-speed running 3.73's.
http://s102.photobucket.com/user/flyinmonkeys32/media/20140904_181001_zpsa7d439a8.jpg.html
Started machining the flywheel a last week and finished tonight. Ended up getting a new Centerforce Clutch and a new slave cylinder because the old one leaked. Turned it down to 11" diameter to fit in the bell housing and faced it down to make a good mounting surface.
http://s102.photobucket.com/user/flyinmonkeys32/media/20141007_182611_zps12767124.jpg.html
Forgot to take a pic when I had it in the mill but here it is after I put the pins in and drilled the bolt holes.
http://s102.photobucket.com/user/flyinmonkeys32/media/20141018_175622_zpse36fc7ed.jpg.html
Clutch mounted.
http://s102.photobucket.com/user/flyinmonkeys32/media/20141022_192200_zps9937dc29.jpg.html
Also got my adapter plate finished tonight. 1" 6061-T6 aluminum.
http://s102.photobucket.com/user/flyinmonkeys32/media/20141021_174219_zps62c2cccb.jpg.htmlhttp://s102.photobucket.com/user/flyinmonkeys32/media/20141022_185321_zpsced90f56.jpg.html

I will also be doing some upgrades to the truck along the way.
-Swapping the weak 7.5" rear for a 8.8" with limited slip.
-Swapping the trans out for one out of a 4.0l for the better spread on the ratios.
-Swapping to full manual 4x4 and getting rid of the electric transfer case and vacuum hubs

Should have more progress in the next few weeks after I pull the motor/trans currently in the truck.

(Photobucket changed and I can't figure out how to make thumbnails, mods let me know if you wan them thumbs and I can see if I can figure a different way to post them)

Rangmar 10-23-2014 12:54 AM

Looking great did you use the 3.0 pattern or the 4.0 pattern?

DetroitDiesel 10-23-2014 07:35 AM

Sweet build can't wait to see the finished product, yours and mine :rocking:

dieselxj 10-23-2014 07:38 AM

I got the pics fine. I see 2 bolts in the flywheel in the lathe. Did you bolt the flywheel to a plug or a mandrel, to chuck it up? That would be another way to do it. Do you have a pic of that setup? I am still learning, and work set up seems to be where i have made more than one mistake.
Also your adapter looks very nice, did you measure it by hand? Was it manual cut or cnc?
Either way, nice looking

DetroitDiesel 10-23-2014 09:35 AM

To get my flywheel in the lathe we just bolted it to a spare crankshaft

flyinmonkeys32 10-23-2014 09:02 PM

Thanks, its the 4.0 pattern and they have it on file now and I might make a template for the 3.0 when I pull it out in case anyone is interested.

I used a mandrel that I made. It should really be a lot shorter/closer to chuck, but I used a piece that was acquired for a different job so I didn't want to cut it down.

I think some can see the pics I posted, but I cant see them after I post them, anyone else having that issue? I might try a different file server than photobucket

handcannon 10-23-2014 10:28 PM

New to this site. I see blacked out pics, but when I click on the pic title the pic will come up on photobucket.

On a second subject, where in Oregon are you, if you don't mind telling? I'm in the Albany/Jefferson area. If we are not too far apart, and if you don't mind someone seeing first hand what you are doing I'm interested in seeing first hand.

Don

flyinmonkeys32 10-23-2014 11:39 PM

Absolutely. I'm in Canby not too far north from you just off I-5. PM me and we can meet up sometime.

I got the same thing with the pics... photobucket used to be really easy to use for thumbnails, I just cant figure it out now since they changed it lol

FTE 10-24-2014 11:07 AM

Good to see more doing the swap! I would be interested in meeting up as well, I am just north of you. I was just looking at my records and so far I have 20,000 miles on my swap! Still driving it like I stole it!

handcannon 10-24-2014 11:21 PM

flyinmonkeys, thanks for the reply and the invite. I have about another week of a house remodel project I'm helping my son's friend with, then I'll have flexibility with my time. When that time comes I'll PM you to set up a time to meet.

Maybe we can come up with a time when FTE can be there also. I'd really like to see a completed project. I just recently found this site and learned about the Kubota motor. I have my Dad's 1973 Datsun 620 pickup that I'd like to use as a diesel swap project, (looking for good fuel mileage) if I can come up with a reasonably priced motor/swap.

I was originally thinking of the Mercedes OM616 4 cylinder diesel. From what I've read about it, the OM616 is considered a bit anemic in the MB chassis, but the 73 Datsun is a good 1000 lbs lighter than the MB, so I was hoping it would be a good match. But, after doing some more research I came to the conclusion that the OM616 lower oil pan and the Datsun tie rod would try to occupy the same location.

Soooo---- more research time.

Me too. I am out of town for the next two weeks, but we should all meet up. I would really like to see another swap in person. I saw Rangmar's but he was working on something and I didnt get a chance to hear it.

Count me in, joy rides included!

handcannon 10-26-2014 11:32 PM

Sounds good to me. That should let me finish the current project and get a good start on splitting my firewood. The trees have been down and cut into stove length chunks since July, but I've been soooo busy I haven't had the time to do any splitting. Fortunately the weather has been mild enough I haven't needed much heat.

redveloce 10-30-2014 11:49 AM

I may be able to come down and meet up as well.

flyinmonkeys32 11-16-2014 12:14 PM

I am finally back in town and after Monday I should have a bit more time. You guys still interested in meeting up sometime? Looking forward to that joyride:choochoo:

flyinmonkeys32 11-16-2014 12:17 PM

Also want to give a shout out to Sam at Parts-Barn. Awesome guy to deal with, and a wealth of knowledge.

handcannon 11-16-2014 12:37 PM

Good timing! I'm definitely interested. I just sent you a PM with my contact info. On there I did note I wouldn't be available Nov 23, but on second thought, I think the Thanksgiving basket project is in the morning only.

Don

flyinmonkeys32 11-18-2014 10:25 PM

I just sent a PM to handcannon, FTE, and redveloce. Let me know if you guys get it and when works for you all to meet up sometime.

handcannon 11-19-2014 08:14 AM

I'm available any day of the week except for Saturdays. Normally I will be available throughout the day on any Sunday except for this coming Sunday (Nov 23). I will be tied up in the morning, but available after noon.

Thank you for this opportunity. I'm looking forward to getting together with all of you for this.

You just need to move to the great Pacific Northwet. (the S was deliberately left out) (hehe)

As an update. My church's Thanksgiving baskets will be filled Saturday evening so I am available all day Sunday. Although it is probably too short of notice to plan anything.

flyinmonkeys32 12-30-2014 12:30 PM

Sorry guys, I got wrapped up with work and family over the the holidays. If you are all down, lets try and meet up after the new year.

I got some progress done on my truck too so there will be something to actually look at and talk about haha. I got the stock motor and trans out this weekend and I got the motor mounts done and am working on finishing up the oil pan this week.

FTE 12-30-2014 07:07 PM

Sounds good, glad to see you're back at it. Looking forward to seeing your truck!

handcannon 12-30-2014 11:07 PM

I also am still interested. Just as a reminder, I'm usually available any day of the week except for Saturdays. Looking forward to hearing back about this.

flyinmonkeys32 01-03-2015 12:02 PM

Thought I would share a few updated pictures...

I wanted to keep the stock trans location so bolted the engine and trans up and then mounted the trans in the stock location and built my motor mounts. I will have to modify the upper control arm mount a little bit (to clear the oil filter boss) but other then that it fits great.

Passenger side mount
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m108/flyinmonkeys32/20141228_191622_zps84e1d26b.jpghttp://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m108/flyinmonkeys32/20141228_192904_zpse5528d42.jpg
Driver side mount
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m108/flyinmonkeys32/20141228_191619_zps19de1043.jpghttp://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m108/flyinmonkeys32/20141228_192853_zps0bff889f.jpg
I had to relocate the oil filter because of the tight fit with the control arm and am going to mount it down on the frame rail.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m108/flyinmonkeys32/20141231_143641_zps159b66b6.jpghttp://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m108/flyinmonkeys32/20141231_143844_zpsa4d1a7aa.jpg
Also started the oil pan. Still need to add the drain plug and 2 ports for the oil return off the turbo and alternator/vacuum pump. its kind of hard to see in the pic but the driver side of the pan is about an inch lower then the passenger side to clear the vent tube off the top of the diff. I also need to modify the oil pickup tube for the new pan.

looks good, kind of hard to tell from your picture. Also not sure if you wanted a shorty fitler, but did you try and take off the oil filter intermediate housing and just run the filter from the front housing straight out , I did not think mine would fit that way, but there is a shorty filter that did the trick for me, and I think there is even one more filter shorter than the one I am running especially if you get the smaller filter center boss adapter as some others have.

FTE 01-03-2015 11:37 PM

You can also re-clock the stock filter housing.

flyinmonkeys32 01-04-2015 11:23 PM

I was actually thinking of clocking it too but need to check it when I put the motor back in. Do you by chance know what the threads are in the block where that stub pipe sticks out for that intermediate 90 degree adapter?

dieselxj 01-04-2015 11:47 PM

I don't think it is really the actual block, I think it is the front case. Are you talking about the filter center? or the 4 little bolts that hold the intermediate housing on? For the center part, I am pretty sure it is the same as the big OE Kubota filter. I just took off my intermediate housing and put the OE Kubota filter on until I found the shorty filter with the same thread as the Kubota

flyinmonkeys32 01-04-2015 11:54 PM

Ill have to take a pic of it tomorrow. It sticks into that intermediate piece

FTE 01-05-2015 11:52 AM

I just unscrewed the nipple from the front cover and swapped it for the nipple that is in the intermediate piece. Mine has the same thread as the stock Ford filter.

Beagle 01-05-2015 06:25 PM

^^ Thanks! That's news I can use, means an 5.0 Explorer's right angle adapter will fit, it's imminently clockable.

http://wholesale.tasca.com/graphics/...Z6L621AA/1.jpg

/edit - hmm. maybe not. The Ford adapter to the block has two different threads. Rats.

You can just clock the Kubota filter adapter like the Ford if you want.

Lol it must have been one of those days... I didnt even think of looking at the adapter. I got the threaded adapters swapped and the oil bypass adapter fits great.

Also got a bunch of parts yesterday for the turbo and alternator oil drains, should be finishing the oil pan up this week and get the motor back in the truck for good

flyinmonkeys32 01-18-2015 01:15 AM

Got the oil pan finished up and on. Should have the motor back in a few days.

flyinmonkeys32 01-21-2015 11:55 PM

I know enough about electronics to be dangerous. I am at the point where I am trying to do what Rangmar and I think a few others have done and use the factory crank trigger to get my tach reading.

I have the cluster out now and have traced the tach input path on that really thin circuit paper stuff. Is that where i should splice the sensor into the wire on the harness that goes to that lead? with one side of the sensor, and run the other side to ground? or do I need to peel that back thin circuit paper back and hook up to the actual PCB behind that? and is it that simple? any resistors or a rectifier inline?

On a different note, I have some time this weekend if you local guys still want to meet up?

Rangmar 01-22-2015 12:45 AM

1 Attachment(s)
I ran a positive wire to a keyed on source to the crank sensor then the other wire on the crank sensor to the signal wire on the tach. Not the circuit board just the wire that connects to the correct pin. Make 2 notches in the crank pulley for a 4cyl truck and 3 for a 6cyl truck its just that easy
Attachment 31688

DetroitDiesel 01-22-2015 08:05 AM

On my truck I used the factory crank sensor, one wire tied to 12 volt ignition and I found the tach wire in the engine harness. I know it was tan with a coloured stripe, I think a yellow stripe. Keeps it neater and it's one less wire you have to run through the firewall and beneath the dash
