Default Kubota V2203 turbochargers and intercoolers

We did a little of this last week and I thought Redveloce had a good idea meaning to start a compilation thread for the different Turbochargers Intercoolers and wastegates that can or have been used on the Kubota V2203.
So I will cut and paste a bit to get this started, and as usual please feel free to add or make corrections as you see fit.

Here is a v2203 turbo list, or part of it, as it is a bit old now. I apologize if I got any of the info incorrect, or if someone did not want to be associated The DB site is quite a bit more involved with the v2203 than where I originally posted this info on 4btswaps, Not sure but it may help someone

I did compile a list of the turbos that have or were installed on the engine and a short list of proposed turbos. I cannot verify any of these details other than what was posted on the various forums. I tried to list the user names of the users as well and any abbreviated comments about the turbos. Please feel free to correct any mistakes I may have made, as I am sure I have made some.


OEM for vt2203T= TD025, and TD03

CT26 from a supra twin FTE #1
Mercedes 300d FTE #2 not run for long
TD04L-10 FTE #3 good results

IHI RHF3 usedkubotaman #1 too small
TD04H-13C Mitsubishi from volvo 2.3 usedkubotaman #2 too big
GT1749 SAAB 95 usedkubotaman #3
TDO4L-13G usedkubotaman #4 ???
K03 from a VW Passat 1.8l working well

IHI RHF4 from danielbuck jeep cj2a OE kubota new engine?

that is what I have, again I can not vouch for accuracy, and a lot of the exact model #'s are not present, which can make a huge difference.

I think the Kubota turbo topic may merit its own thread here. Does anyone know if there is a way to edit a first post? I haven't found a way on this forum, but it would be great if we could keep an easy to find listing of tested turbos.

Here's my experience from the best of my memory. I also found out that the WRX actually has a TD03-13T, not G. Some of the earlier listings online have it listed as a G, but that appears to be incorrect.

TD04L-13T-6 from 2004 WRX
Results: 3-4PSI from 1600-1900RPM, about 8PSI @ 2000, would slowly push up to 14PSI by 2500 which was where the RPM was limited at the time. Very quickly rising EGT if fueled too quickly.

Compound turbos
Small turbo: TD03-08G-4.8 from twin turbo Volvo S80
Big turbo: TD04L-13T from WRX
Results: 8PSI @ 1800, 12PSI @ 2000, quickly rising into the 20s with more RPM. Felt labored, not quick revving, would blow filler cap off the valve cover. Likely very high drive pressure.

TD03-08G-4.8 from Volvo S80 alone
Results: Same as compounds but would have to be pushed very hard to reach 12PSI @ 2000RPM, and would fall flat after that.


TD03L-10k-4.8 CHRA and compressor housing from BMW 335D with Exhaust housing from the Volvo TD03
Results: Same as Volvo TD03, but would continue pulling up to 2300-2400RPM

TD04L-10KYRC-5 from Cummins B3.3
Results: 4PSI ~1200RPM, 6PSI @1500, 8PSI @ 1600, 12PSI @ 2000RPM, ~20PSI @ 2500RPM, 30PSI @ 3000RPM. It continues to pull hard to over 3500RPM. EGTs generally below 1000, and will only rise above 1100 if pulling very hard for a long time below 2200RPM. The turbo builds boost very fast over 2000RPM, but intake heat rises quickly over 15PSI.
Notes: Stock turbo on Mitsubishi 2.0TDI. Also, the similar TD04-10T was stock on the Mitsubishi 2.5 diesel vehicles.

I just saw this on ebay This kit from overland does not list the make and model of turbo though, it is eBay item number: 181458889975, listed as Kubota V2203 turbo kit

plus there is another on ebay listed as

Intercoolers are going to be hard to compare unless everyone has their intake air temp sensors installed. I've figured out that the all metal sensors, like for coolant, are very slow reacting in air, and tend to end up telling you the temperature of the material they're threaded into (eg the intake manifold).

Does anyone have any info on the efficiency drop from running a intercooler behind the radiator as opposed to in front of the radiator?? I imagine it is going to be a big efficiency drop
It is not going to be easy to put intercooler in front of the OE radiator on the jeep xj. The intercooler will fit in front of the radiator, but piping the intercooler will be a problem.

Also I found this info courtesy of Rangmar , it has some more K03 options

Here are some specs on the k03 turbos I've found on another site

"I'm going to list each turbo model, what its fitted to, and its compressor/turbine specs along with maximum power (although these figures are probably in silly nonsense US wheel power, or perhaps borg-warners recommended power output, its still useful for comparison)

K03-005 - Standard fit on ALL cable throttle B5 1.8T's INCLUDING the 180hp AJL engine.
K03-029 - Standard fit on Drive-by-wire B5's and most B6 1.8T's bar the "190" model. Similar in specifications to the normal K03 fitted to Golf/A3's
K03-073 - Standard fit on B6 190 model. Similar in specifications to the K03s fitted to Golf/A3's
K04-015 - Not standard fit, Borg Warner turbo designed to be a direct replacement upgrade for the longitudinal 1.8T.
K04-020 - Standard fit on the TT/S3

So there we have it. Shows us the reasonably readily available k03-073 turbo is a nice upgrade without going to the expense of a new k04-015 too."

I didn't realize there were that many different K03 turbos, now I have to go figure out which ones I have. I think mine are 029's but I'm gonna make sure.

Inter-cooler: it's got to be in front of the radiator, behind the condenser is OK but definitely in front of the radiator! Have you thought about a radiator/intercooler/fan package? I pulled my setup out of a Volvo at the local pull your own part place. It made a nice tight setup and it was fairly easy to set up.

Oh, pictures still won't work for me, I sent an email to the Admin but haven't heard anything.

How big are your turbo oil drains??? General question for all the Kubota swappers. I am starting off at just under 1/2" ID from the turbo, or AN-8 aluminum tubing. then it necks down a bit to 3/8 rubber, Then it gets too small where it turns into the block. I thought some were running turbo drains into the dipstick tube?

That's a bit personal, don't ya think?

I drilled and tapped a 1/2" NPT hole right through a thin part of the block.

Hi Red. Thanks . I think your setup is very similar to FTE. I wonder if Kubotaman is around. I thought he used the dipstick tube. That is about the size I can muster from the bolt boss I am already using. I have my oil pan off just now, I will try and pick up some 1/2" pipe just in case I need it.
Where in that pic is your exh down pipe?

Be very careful if you decide to drill the dipstick hole (haven't looked to see if you have). I somehow managed to drill too low hit the oil pickup passage on both of my engines when I drilled the boss. It looks like it just goes through the end of the boss for the engine mount bolt, but the bolt needs to be there to get oil pressure. I'll make a damned jig next time! Ignore the gunk, this is the engine that melted down. I use it to test theories before drilling and hacking on the one in the Jeep.

It's also handy if anyone needs any internal pictures.
