What Red says is Key. you pick your engine, it is your project no one elses. I guess I was trying to say is HP cost $. There are a million different catch phrases for that. You gotta pay to play, you have to sacrifice for speed. etc, etc. Not sure what your engine mod budget is, but to hit your low HP figure will still set you back some $. example new not used turbo $350-850 ish, New injector pump $1-2000, stock size injector overhaul $100 ish. Intercooler plus piping and clamps probably $300+
I think these are conservative prices for mid grade stuff, Not China .
Then don't forget about all other expenses especially if you need to do suspension and steering mods to get around the MB huge front oil sump. The jeep is a rear sump. I think retty much all the MB conversions require some sort of mods to get around the MB front sump. The one super nice thing about the benz is the accessories are already done.
What ever you pick have fun, and keep the pics coming. I do like your choice of chassis. My granny had one of those AMC things, I forget what hers was called it was a 4wd wagon, Hers was not very reliable

have fun

I was told that the MB engine can hit 150 hp with the IP tune, larger turbo, and intercooler. Is this not correct? I'm here to find out if I can work through this all or not. I need to know if this is viable.

As for the oil sump, I don't have exact measurements yet, but it should fit in front of the cross member, the pan will need a bit of 'fine tuning' for the steering I believe, it really just depends on how it mounts up. The MB is a bit on the bigger side which is why I said I would rather do the Kubota if I can get the power I am looking for.

Also, would anyone be able to give me some exact measurements of the MB so I could see for certain weather or not it will fit?

Yes you can get a bit more out of the benz , but not sure what you consider "much more room to improve at a low cost". For your low HP # You are talking about a 25 hp gain over stock
What you just listed above and what I wrote are pretty much the same, except you might not need the new fancy pump, so that will save you a bunch, but you are still going to be on the hook for the new turbo, and the cooler setup, and the injector rebuild might be optional. So figure $5-700 for engine mods, and you might hit your low HP #. If you get a lot of used parts it will be a lot cheaper. You are going to have some engine expenses no matter what engine you pick
If you go with the MB, I would say try and get one that has not had Vegetable oil run through it . PLUS don't forget about the cost for the adapter, or adapter material, and the engine mounts, New clutch, New exhaust ,MB's have passenger side exh. Plus $ again for all the little do dads, hoses, hose adapters, senders, filters, steering hoses, oil cooler hoses and or a new oil cooler, Nice new heavy duty battery, and new battery cables, to handle the diesel starting load.
Where did you get your transmission??? what are you going to do about New drive shafts, Transfer case, and engine starter, The Jeep AX15's have a Trans mounted starter, that can be used to start the MB, but your old AMC starter is on the wrong side from the MB's
You should be able to find measurements somewhere on the NET. Look for engine specs and drawings. I don't know that measurements will be a substitute for actually putting the engine in place. Until you build it up with the transmission you won't know where it is going to sit.
ok I just get a bit over the top sometimes, when I think about how much this hobby ends up costing. It starts off sounding like it is inexpensive, you get a whole donor car for cheap, and off you go. BUT that is just where it starts.

Have fun with it

Anyone have any leads on finding a V2203? Still can't find one for less than $1000. I've looked on every CL within 1000 miles of me and nothing. Ebay only has ones for $1000+ and that doesn't include the $200-300 shipping cost.

You keep trying to talk me into the Kubota but I'm already considering it, as I've said already the money is the only thing stopping me. Not only is the engine itself much more expensive than the MB, its also going to take a lot more to get a turbo on it, where as with the MB I've already got the whole set up and it's already running.

On a side note, I have 3.08 gears.
Sorry, didn't mean to come off that way, but I thought your goals for the Benz are a little high. I have experience with both and prefer the Kubota, just my opinion nothing more. Oh and the 3.08 gears will work with the Kubota not the benz.

Well guess I'm definitely not doing the Benz then. Looking like the 4.2 might be stuck in there a bit while longer yet since I can't find any Kubotas. Called a few truck repair places, no luck there..
