I am quickly talking myself into another manual steered jeep.
benefits of manual steering
1. ease of build to not have to fab a mount
2. durability, and simplicity, no worries with hydraulic hoses, reservoir, or mount problems and belts
3. Save horsepower which might be pretty significant on the little Kubota
4. No one else will want to drive it with out PS
5. I get a brand new steering box to tighten up the front end.

befifits of PS
1. power steering
2. low cost
3. re-sale value?

I probably still need the extra pulley on mine for the AC, I don't think I can drive the AC from the alternator,

My '01 jeep is 3500 with me onboard, I got to weigh it on a probably 75 year old drive on triple beam feed scale, I was shocked to see the guy sliding the weights around, and then just tell me the weight through the window.
Are you trying to convince me or yourself. . It sure seems to me as if you have logically went over this thoroughly yourself and have come to conclusion that Manual is better if not easier.

As for the A/C off of the Alternator well ummmmmmm No. The pulley on the Alternator will not turn the A/C fast enough. But you would also have the same problem with the power steering unit maybe. I still have to compare pulley sizes to be sure of this but from appearance it seems like it. But even if it does not turn the power steering pump fast enough the only thing it could do is make it sluggish. Or to say it might fight you if you try and turn the wheel faster than what the power steering pump will allow.

I am not saying I am giving up on my PS system. but I will not feel bad if it takes a lower priority

Are the alternator/vacuum pump combs loud? The pump that I run on mine is very loud, you can here it above the engine at idle.

I have no idea. As currently I think only Rangmar is running one. But since they are used on a production vehicle I would not think they would be all that loud.

No, they are quiet. I think it is a rotary pump not a diaphram. Also on a side note, the debate over p/s v/s manual, I thought I would notice a power loss with p/s, but it turned out to be a non issue. It only saps power when steering goes to full lock.

Like fte said very quiet they are a sealed system and a rotary pump. I will be hooking up my power steering soon so my wife can drive it when I'm on the road.
