Start of a Kubota V2203DI into a 91 Mazda B2200 Ext Cab.

FTE Felt I should start a New Thread. That is if anyone out there is interested? It will be a slow build.

I picked up a couple of Kubota V2203DI's about a week ago and yesterday I finally had a chance to mess with one. With the help of FTE I got it hooked up on the pallet and it started. And by the way it took me by great surprise when it did start so darn fast lol. Then after taking off a few items and cleaning up the area a bit I picked it up with a cherry picker and commenced to spraying it with some Super Clean and power washing it. But I should have used some Oven Cleaner and still may. But got it pretty clean and drained the Black Goo (Oil) that was in it and threw it on an engine stand.

Let me back up a second lol. I could not hook fuel up to it due to the fact that they use a Banjo style of fitting. But the Banjo Bolt was still on one so I was in good shape. Took a piece of flat aluminum and drilled a hole in it the size of the Banjo bolt and then drilled a hole in the side for an NPT fuel Fitting so then we had Fuel. Yeeeeeeee Hawwwwwww. In the first picture you will be able to see it. :)

dieselxj 07-29-2013 08:53 PM

i look forward to your build. I plan on starting my Kubota build shortly. I need to put the finishing touches on my Mercedes jeep first. I am sure I will have to play with my Kubota as well before the actual swap starts.
I am particularly interested what you end up with for a bell housing adapter, and your clutch.
Good luck and remember to have fun with it

JesterGrin_1 07-29-2013 10:25 PM

As for the Transmission I am still kinda up in the air. I need to make some calls but I thought someone made an inch pattern adapter for the Big three. If so then the cost of the adapter might be worth it and run a Ford T-5 trans.

So right now I am just batting options as there is not a whole bunch of feed back on this or any other forum really for our nutty conversions with the V2203DI series of engines.

I am also looking into rear end options as well since they do not make a Ring N Pinion anywhere near the 2.73 or 3.O8 needed to run the diesel for the Mazda. So I have been kicking around the Ford Mustang with the V6 Rear end as I think it is a 7.7 of which is the same ring and pinion as the ford ranger thus gears are available. Or a bunch of work with a GM rear end from a Tahoe or equivalent.

As you can tell I have no idea lol.

Did send an e mail to Garret to see what they have to say about a suitable Turbo for the engine without water cooling. Then I may design my own exhaust manifold for the Turbo install to bring it down along the side of the block instead of everything above the valve cover.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

While I am thinking about it where would be the best place to get gaskets for these little Gems?

dieselxj 07-30-2013 10:12 AM

another rear end option could be the jeep Cherokee, I think the xj is just a tiny bit less track than the ranger. Jeep has lots of ratios available pretty cheaply

FTE 07-31-2013 11:11 AM

Glad to see you have a runner! You got a smokin deal on those motors, great start to a low buck conversion. You could also just make a 90 deg adapter for the turbo to get it low and on the side. I think I heard of someone else adapted a turbo manifold off of a Neon srt, so that may be another option.

Walkenvol 08-01-2013 08:06 AM

Is this all that is needed to use the V2203DI out of a reefer unit as a truck repower;
- custom turned crankshaft adaptor to mount your flywheel of choice or turn down the Kabota flywheel to fit inside your tranny bellhousing and find a clutch that will fit it?
- engine block to transmission adaptor (thickness of steel dependant upon tranny selected)
- different IP spring
- oil pan from a bobcat then modified to fit particular truck
- turbo from ?
- exhaust manifold from ? to mount turbo
- custom exhaust
- custom motor mounts
- custom engine accessory mounts (alt, ps pump, a/c compressor)

I've read where FTE prefers the V2203DI to the OM617's performance, but it would appear the performance improvements would have to be significant to offset the extra challenges and expense of using the V2203DI over the OM617 but maybe I'm missing something? Limited following of the V2203DI vs the vast internet help available when working on an OM617 scares me also.

I found it easyer to swap in the V2203 v/s the OM617, you have the same flywheel/ bell adapter issue, the same motor mount issue etc. Yes the performance is way better, the only advantage I see the benz has is the high rpm factor (that you need because it's such a slug).

Your one of the few who have done both so your opinion carries weight.

Without the benefit of your experience, the advantage I see of the OM617 is;
- mercedes 4x4 has an affordable off the shelf 617 flywheel / bell adapter to several Jeep trannys
- 617 already has the turbo so no custom manifold work.
- 617 already has the motor accessory mounts
- easier to obtain a 617 vs 2203 in my area of the country
- larger DIY support community with the 617
- 617 has a long proven track record of outstanding durability

If I read your posts correctly, your 2203 gets 30% better fuel economy vs your 617 along with having more low end torque? Huge advantages to me for sure!

It would be interesting to have more of the 617 comparisons to increase the sample size to see if the performance comparision is close to the same.

Will also be interesting to follow the long term results of adding a turbo to a motor that came from factory without one.

JesterGrin_1 11-04-2013 03:50 AM

It has been awhile since I have been able to start to work on this project. So I thought I would update a bit. I will have a trans adapter coming very soon but I will have to purchase a Transmission for the adapter as well. But I thought I would add a couple of pictures to show that using the 91 Mazda B-2200 Ext might make things a bit easier in the engine compartment even though it is not as deep or as long as a Ranger. But the only cross member that is there is easy to cut and weld back up and lower. I found a couple of pictures to show what I mean and what I am starting with.

A New Item for the Install and a To Be Item. :)

Adapter from Gaines here on the forum I hope to receive soon. I also pulled the Flywheel today and hope to get some good measurements to machine the flywheel to if possible or have it done.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ps6df58c73.jpg

And a Mitsubishi evolution Inter Cooler. FTE Informed me of this one. :)This is a company photo. Not mine but the same. :)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ps1429d26b.jpg

I did pick up a Ford M5OD 5 Speed for the build.

In the next couple of days I hope to pick up a Ford Ranger 8.8 31 Spline rear differential assembly and a drive shaft to convert over. And I will install either a 2.73 gear set or 3.08 Not sure as of yet? It depends on what a friend of mine has laying around.

I also hope to win a KO3 Turbo. Keeping my fingers crossed on that one. And also hope it is a good one. :)

And moved the Kubota V2203 DI Into my Buddies little shop of Horrors lol.

This might be slow but if anyone out there wishes I will keep this thread updated on what goes on?

FTE 11-13-2013 10:35 AM

Looks like your buddy has a well equiped shop and some cool cars as well! We will be very interested in your build, and how well this motor fits in the Mazda.

Nice!

JesterGrin_1 11-16-2013 07:03 PM

Well Today I had a painful reminder. And that is Easy Off Oven Cleaner burns. I just hate it when the wind changes direction. So now my face is red. :w2: I also was reminded that I am not as young as I used to be as for some reason the Ford Ranger 8.8 differential was allot heavier than I remember:nope: So next time I have to pick it up and move it around I will get help.

But at any rate I still have some more clean up work to do and replace the pinion seal and rear cover plate seal. Then throw some paint on it.

I have not pulled the cover off as of yet so I do not know if it is a locker or not but it does have 3.27 Gears. FTE feels I should leave them in and try it out for a bit before making up my mind to change them. But I do have available a set of 2.73 gears and 3.08 just in case.

I will keep updating even if it is boring. :tttt:

I'm running a 3.08 gear with 235/75/15 tires, they are about 30" tall. For my area, which I understand the interstate speeds are faster compared to y'alls, it's a great set up. I can run interstate speeds with ease. I agree with FTE, keep the 3.27, it should be perfect. :pca1:

lol. I am in South TEXAS so interstate speed limits are usually 70-85 MPH lol. Glad to hear that our speed limits are in the lower range. :c:

But The 91 Mazda B-2200 Ext Cab in its stock factory form prefers between 65-70 MPH for best millage. So unless I am in fear of getting run over I try and keep it in that speed area. But if I am lucky and the Kubota will give me good millage in the 70-75 MPH Range that would be fantastic.

Again though just in case I do have available a 2.73 and 3.08 gear set if need be. You can pick those gear sets up cheap for the 8.8.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Right now I am more of a process of getting the Big Parts and small parts and cleaning things up as I go. As I use my truck every day. As I do not wish for the truck to be down long when I start on the conversion.

usedkubotaman 11-17-2013 06:21 AM

Yea your speed limits are not in the lower range for sure, I though you were on the west coast. Try the 3.27 first and then change if your not happy.:pca1:

Well today I cleaned up the rear diff a bit more and threw a coat of paint on it. It is not spotless but it is going in a Truck lol. Plus I am not really worried about it as I am sure I will have to do some grinding and welding on it to put the Ford Ranger 8.8 Into my 91 Mazda B-2200.

Well it seems as though a few people here that know what they are doing are using the GlowShift 3 in 1 Diesel Combo Gauge. So I put in an order for one.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psa84c2fda.jpg

I will soon be asking where the best places are to put the senders. Again Thanks Gang for all of the Great information and help. :tu:

FTE 11-18-2013 11:45 AM

EGT probe needs to be in the exhaust manifold just below the turbo flange, the boost signal somewhere on the intake manifold, alot of us are using the port that the crankcase breather hose went to(that has to be changed when you turbo it), and some are using the temp for charge air temp.

dieselxj 11-18-2013 12:01 PM

FTE the guy at glowshift specifically said the temp probe was for fluids, when I asked him about using the 3 in one temp probe for exactly that charge air temp. I was thinking I might have to put the probe in a little oil bath fitting and then stick it in the air intake.
You guys are successful running them as delivered for air temp???

I ordered a 3 in 1 like the above it should be here way before my jeep is ready.
just curious Jester what did you spend on your gauge. I got mine for $159.

I do not know how you did that. But good going. I got this one for $172.49 shipped. All I could find was a $10.00 off coupon that would work.

Using it as an Air Temp is a pretty neat idea if it works and holds up.

As for the EGT sender do you mean in the Kubota factory exhaust manifold?

FTE 11-18-2013 12:17 PM

You can put it in the manifold or the adapter, it just needs to be before the turbo to get acurate readings. I think some are also using the temp for oil as well. I don't have the glowshift, I have an autometer EGT.

dieselxj 11-18-2013 12:36 PM

I thought it would be very nice to have charge air temp. The jeep has Intake air temp as part of its OBD stuff. you can see the IAT with a scan tool. I am going to try and keep that working. I have my doubts.
This summer I thought I was doing pretty good with an IAT at 138-Deg F. I think the lowest I have seen is 118.
You guys up North have a whole different set of issues.
my weather station will show a heat index on my front porch between 146-154 DegF in the summer.

JesterGrin_1 11-18-2013 12:40 PM

Yes it get a Tad Warm and Humid in South TEXAS.:s:

If I have room I may install an extra windshield washer bottle and put a couple of sprayers on the Inter Cooler. As they made a 1 Gallon Canadian Washer Bottle for the Mazda Trucks. I guess it is very dirty in Canada.

dieselxj 11-18-2013 12:56 PM

Welllllllllllllllllllllllll is it a box of pieces or will it work? :scare2: I might just start calling you Mr. Suspense :tttt:

dieselxj 11-18-2013 04:47 PM

no idea if it will work. It looks OK. the gauge is reading 29# of boost just sitting there. I am hoping that is normal because of lack of electricity. Heck I won't know if it works until I put it in the jeep, and that could be who knows when.. I took the day off from working in the shop for some clean up and to prep the POS jeep to go the the dump.

more on my thread later.

Glad to hear it is in one piece. Sorry I do not trust any Postal Service. To many personal Horror stories. Not to mention one Custom Ordered Rifle barrel that I received BENT. They have to work at it to Bend a Bull Barrel. :scare2:

Kudos to them for bending a bull barrel, they must have actually tried to bend that, by setting it over a pothole then running it over with a truck. Excited to see your project unfold! Hopefully Ill be doing this in my ranger soon.

Well I do not have much to report at this time. But with the help of Rangemar and DieselXJ I purchased a Isuzu Alternator/Vacuum pump combo.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/360512466434...S:3160&vxp=mtr

And this evening I decided for an oil fill to tap the valve cover and use a AN fitting with a cap. I will post a picture when completed. :)

dieselxj 11-24-2013 01:37 AM

I got my bobcat oil pan and dip stick last week, but I have not installed them yet. I will need to put in the new dipstick and an oil fill. I am would like to see your filler. Are you going to use a AN bulkhead fitting with a o-ring and jam nut? or tap for threads?
Does anyone know if there is a replacement valve cover gasket available that is re-useable silicone?

JesterGrin_1 11-24-2013 01:48 AM

I taped it for threads. I will probably use an O ring to seal it to the valve cover and some Blue Loctite to secure the AN fitting to the Valve Cover. I will have to mark the bottom of the AN fitting to throw on my lathe to remove the excess threads that protrude inside of the valve cover.

Tomorrow I will update my thread with Pictures on the Oil Fill.

dieselxj 11-24-2013 02:04 AM

what size fitting? So O-ring on the inside or outside? I would think that you could put the jam nut on the inside and like you said trim down the left over. Hopefully it will clear the valve train.
are you going in from the flat top. It is too late, to go out to the shop. but if I remember there is a angled flat just off the topside of the VC towards the front of the engine on the drivers side.
I was thinking to weld a fill fitting on there. but a AN-12 bulkhead would work well too.

I believe I am going to use an AN-12 fitting. But no on the Nut as from what I have read from FTE that the rubber plug would contact the valve train and that rubber plug is probably not nearly as thick as a nut.

There is a spot on the front of the valve cover on top that looks like a knock out but it isnt :). I drilled in the center of that and tapped it for the AN-12 fitting. So the fitting will be threaded in from the top as well as the O ring on the AN-12 fitting.

The place that also looks like a knock out but smaller at a 45 Degree angle on the valve cover I will probably tap and use an AN fitting for return oil from the Isuzu Vacuum Pump like what Rangemar did. But I will have to ask him to make sure.

AWWWWWWWWWWWWW heck I will be back in about Ten minutes with a picture. :)

I just remembered that FTE said the bottom of the rubber plug would interfere with the valve train as in not letting a valve fully close. That is the main reason. And I had the fittings laying around. :)

Rangmar 11-25-2013 09:14 PM

No interference issues with mine the rubber doesn't even go to the bottom of the original divot in the valve cover

Rangmar I would like to ask are you also using the valve cover for the return for the Vacuum pump Oil and the Turbo? And if so how? Thought I would ask while I have the valve cover off for clean up and making holes and paint. Chevy Orange. :)

And the Isuzu Alternator/Vacuum pump should be here Dec,2nd. At times this shipping stuff is slow.

I should have another large package from Leonard's Parts in a little over a week. As I will wait for a couple of parts that he is waiting on before he ships the BOX. :)

List of Stuff. If I forgot something please let me know as I can still add to it. :)

1. Oil Pan
2. 24 Bolts for pan
3. Intake Manifold Gasket
4. Exhaust Gaskets
5. Valve Cover Gasket
6. Dip Stick Assembly
7. Rear Main Seal and Gasket
8. 2800 RPM Governor Spring Kubota Part No. 19077-56412 <--- Thanks UsedKubotaMan
9. Spin on Oil Filter Adapter

I read and look at every single picture I can find and some things are just not in view or obvious to me. And I think I need to go to 250 Reading Glasses. :humm:
