This truck is about to kill me. Ran great for a couple days then it started wanting to shut off on its own. It would crank back up after a minute if I held it to the floor and held the key. But now when I first crank it it will blow out grey smoke for 5 seconds then it will turn black, and then it quits. Runs good and revs good I can rev past 2 and 3 thousand great at a 1/4 throttle but if I hold down the peddle it won't get above 3 and starts blowing out black smoke bad. Please someone help. At least point me in the right direction.

 

check all the intake and turbo fittings for leaks. usually black smoke is a lack of air.

 

I am going to have to say its your lift pump, but Budgreen is correct about the black smoke.

 

But would that make it shut off after 10-20 minutes? Or is it likely to be two different problems?

I would check connections to the turbo and check the wastegate, then the fuel pressure/flow, then the PMD

 

My thought is that if when it dies you keep cranking on it and fills up with fuel, when it does fire up the mixture is wrong and as a result black smoke comes out, and yes check pmd.

 

DTC codes first please.

You're OBDI so you can get the flash-out codes with nothing more complicated than a paper clip.

First thought off the top of my head is a PMD going bad but you haven't given enough info or a proper diagnosis yet.....

I haven't been able to do anything lately. But I did order 2 used Pmd boxes to see if that makes a difference and to have a spare.

 

Got box in. Now it runs better and doesn't shut off and its not smoking black anymore but now it smokes white at high rpms.

Put one box in and it smoked white and wouldn't turn over 2000rpms. Put the other box in and now it doesn't smoke at all but it sometimes won't turn over 2000rpms and sometimes it will. Will these stupid boxescause all this?????? HELP I've needed this truck for work for the last 2 weeks and they won't wait much longer. I've only been using used boxes so would a new box fix it or would I be better off trading this truck for another one HELP PLEASE

 

No ones saying anything so I'm guessing ill buy a new Pmd box and it'll be fixed? If not I'm taking truck to scrap. Since no one says it can be anything else.
