Default cummins white smoke and miss

i have a 99 cummins with 50hp injectors and a fass 150 gph. please take time to read full story so you can understand my frustrations. when i got my fass i was not told i needed a draw straw so it kept sucking air. long story short i solved the problem by building a in bed tank with a gravity feed to the fass. it has worked well for 6 months until the other day i ran out of fuel (my in bed tank has no gauge). every time prior to this when i loose prime i can crack some lines and crank it and it will start but it wouldnt this time. after much reaserch i decided i needed an injection pump. i got one from a friends running 24v that had been p-pumped. put the pump in and no change. tried for hours to bleed the lines but no luck. no fuel comes out the lines when cranking. however if i use eather and crank it the truck will run continously but verry heavy white smoke and sputters. the truck will move and drive but somthing is obviously not right. then if i shut it off it will not restart unles eather is used. as i said i have had many probles with the fass and have bypassed it hoping it was the problem. now it is just gravity feed to the vp44 so there is nochance of air. i want to add that after the new vp44 there was absolutly no change everything i just said was the same as with the old pump. i need help badly im at the end of my knowledge. everything is tight. any help is greatly appreciated

i imagine your truck has an electric fuel shutoff solenoid i know the 12 valves have one check to see that it is opening the whole way. you should be able to manually slide it forward. maybe a stupid suggestion but did you check your gravity line maybe it is clogged somehow. also just to dummy proof this you put enough fuel back in your tank right. hope this helps

Ok by bypassing the FASS you could of ruined the VP44. The 24v is designed to have a lift pump in place, stock or aftermarket. YOU MUST run some type of lift pump on these trucks. The VP44 was never designed to pull full, only to push to the injecctors. It can pull for a little while but by that I mean 150-200 miles if you're lucky. A gravity feed to the VP is not enough. You need 10-15psi of fuel going into it. Stop using eather. Just stop. Figure out why it wont start. Drop the tank and put in a good draw straw. You need your lift pump!!!!

Ditto. That threw up red flags when I read it too.

Vp trucks don't have fuel shut offs. Gravity feed as said before wont work and for God sakes leave the starting fluid out of the equation. There is NEVER a need for starting fluid in the modern automotive diesel applications.
If it seems the best answer is starting fluid, enlist a qualified tech to help with your repair.
