Default ether and the 6.9

So im a noob, after reading the forum i have found out the 6.9l, glow plugs and ether are not a good idea. I have used it with glow plugs and the previous owner did also by seeing a few empty cans rolling around the bed.I hoped for a miracle and the glow plugs didnt work,( makes since it wont start with out it. ) they are getting 8 volts for 2 seconds seems weird but thats what my tester came up with. but it is kinda warm.

My question is if the idi plugs were blown out into the cylinder by ether how would i know?
Is there any other damage that could escape detection with out pulling the heads?

Thank you very much!

Check the controller, the 6.9s are notorious from having sporadic glow plug performance as a result of bad controllers. As for ether, IMO it is only to be used as a last resort on any diesel (ie. glow plug relay fails in winter, or first crankup after sitting for a season) as nothing is a bigger pain in the *** then trying to start a motor naturally that has become "addicted" to ether starts.

your best bet would be to buy a new controller and a set of glow plugs. chances are they are both shot if it was being started with either that much

the 6.9 I had was either started in cold weather, and the glow plugs were wired to a push button to use in which i promptly burned them out. spent the money on new plugs and controller and never had a problem with it in that winter or the next, I got hit and rolled it a year later, bought it back for parts and it still started just fine its a beast of a motor.. it was still running just fine almost upsidedown

thanks guys,
I really appreciate the help. If the plug were blown out is there a sound that would give
it away? Or is it a find out when the heads are pulled kind of thing?

On another note I had the famous sinking break petal when i purchased the truck.
I tryed to fix it by by-passing the rear abs because the manifold under the drivers
seat on the frame was leaking. Not only did it fix it but took away 20 feet on my stopping
distance. I know by passing abs is bad and Jesus wouldn't do it. but I got a 20 dollar custom
hose from a local hose shop and bled the breaks. It fixed all my problems.
Just passing the info on, it works and will save you allot of problems and money. but don't do it.
