Default Cruise Control Not Working

1997 dodge 12 valve. All of a suddent the cruise stopped working. I checked all the lines and none of them seem to be cracked or damaged. The batteries are not leaking and I haven't done any work recently where i could have damaged something. The light comes on and once in a while the cruise will engage but then quickly drop. Most often it will not engage anything. other than the lines what could cause this.

moved this here to get you more exposure. i'd dubble check all the vacuum hoses and make sure that they aren't cracked.... also there is suspose to be a check valve somewhere in there. there are people on here more up to speed in this area than me and they'll chime in here soon.

EDIT : also when this issue is resolved you can click the thread tools button and close the thread yourself.

You almost have to have a leak someplace in the Vaccuum line goin to the cruise control. The switch is just not being locked into place and this is done through the vaccuum.

could it be the vacume actuator itself. The lines looked pretty clean. they were not brittle and did not apear to be cracked. I went inch by inch. I pulled off all the rubber connections and manually applied some vacume. There was no reduction in vacume and no air sounds. It just seems odd to me that sometimes it will engage and then a few miles down the road it will automatically disengage while at other times it will not do anything when the cruise switch is triggered.

How about some of your other vaccuum operated items like the 4WD shift, the blower controls for defrost, dash air and floor air. I know in my 99 I had to rebuild the Vac pump but I think things were alittle diferent in your year.
