Default Mis-fire!

Alright, so I was out on the highway on Friday night cruising along at about 75mph and I heard what sounded like a bang and a wheeze so I immediately started coasting down... At first I thought it was driveline related- bearings or drive shaft, but it rolled down smoothly to a stop and the tranny seemed fine. So I pulled over and checked with the scanner and it said "Cylinder #3 Misfire"

So my question now is what can it be and how bad do you think it is?

How many miles do you have on the injectors? More than likely your number 3 injector is bad. It is known on the D-max's for them to go bad.

I'm not sure but I think the injectors have about 130,000 miles on them give or take. Should I replace one or is it wise to do the whole set?

With the misfire is there any moderate risk of internal damage? Like, can I still drive it or should I wait until I can get it fixed?

Yeah if they are original injectors I know that some of the models of D-max's had injector problems. Not sure which ones though.

OK It's going to be looked at in the next couple hours...

Anyone know are the symptoms the same if it's the injector harness vs an injector?

I think it was P0303. I still have it stored. The description said "Cylinder #3 Misfire".

Well I just got off the phone with a few people...

GM Might cover the warranty even though it expired December 2009 but I'm still within mileage, however having the bullydog on for the last 12 months might not help my case.

Aside from that, quotes for injectors here are $385-$395 each, regardless of whether it's new or reman.
Total cost to replace all 8 is $5100 @ 13hrs labour all-in.

This might have to be moved to the badlands pending what I discover...

I'm not sure that I could tackle injectors on my own. I don't have a shop or garage to work in or a good set of tools.

its probaly the injectors if there are that many miles on the factory ones. it could be the injector harness too. im not sure if the LB7s have the same harness problem as the LLYs. make sure to have more then one shop look at it.
My truck sounded like a powerstroke and had about the power of one too when the injector harness went to hell.

OK I just got it back.

Injector #3 is down, all of the others are fine. He used his scan tool and everything was fine, it's just the #3. He said he thought it's not getting enough fuel and trying to open milliseconds sooner, but at idle it puffs like a chimney when it's not completely warm yet so I'm not sure....either way. One bad injector is better than 3 or 4 or all 8... Best news all day.
So this should run me around $1250. That's a hell of a lot better than I thought I'd hear.

Ok I'm still wondering how bad is a misfire in a diesel? Can I still safely drive it?

Hard to say if you should drive it. Could cause cylinder washing. i would only drive it to where the work is going to be done and try to not drive it anywhere else if it can be helped.
