Default 92 6.5 IP shaft failure

Hello,

I have a question, My 1992 Chevy 6.5 TD has had 2 Injector pumps in it in the short time I have owned it. I bought it with a bad one in it, sheared the shaft and the woodruff key on the cam shaft, I installed a 2nd one and the new one sheared the key again along with the shaft in the IP.

My truck is in a reputable local shop now. They are installing a warrentied (sorry for spelling) IP. They got my truck running and said that it is not smoothing out like it should and they suspect that there are injectors that are bad and sugjest having them flow tested and a hefty price. I did notice when I installed the IP that it ran good but did have a little bit of a mis. I thought it would smooth out after the fresh fuel ran thru it for a while combined with some SEAFOAM fuel cleaner. My IP I installed was off a running truck but only lasted about 2 weeks before it came to its death.

My problem is, everything I have read is that injectors do go bad with high milage but I have not read that anyone has had them cause the IP to go bad. What I have read is that water in the fuel can cause this and a few other things. I filled up the truck with fresh fuel when I got her running and my water in fuel light never came on. So I am racking my brain trying to think, should I trust the shop and believe what they told me, or should I be worried that there is something else causing this and suspect it will happen on my new one??

Are you making sure to tighten all 3 bolts even the one on the bottom that is hard to get to? If not it can put the ip at a slight angle and bind it up. The truck has a db2 pump on it and they are fairly reliable.

How many miles are on the truck? If it is over 100,000 there is a good chance the injectors are wore out. Most shop's will test them for free.

Water in fuel is never a good thing and can cause problem with I/P and injectors. There is a drain on the front of the engine looks like a little valve with two hoses going in it. Open it up and see if any water runs out. It will drain strait out on the ground so I would catch it in something clean and see if it has water in it.

I did tighten all 3 bolts, but now that you mentioned that, if I remember correctly it was difficult to get them tight because it was trying to go in at an angle when I installed it, I was sure they were tight but could it have been tight and not seated all the way?? would that have caused the problem?? I noticed when I took off the old IP that who ever installed it did not use all the correct stuff like the gasket that goes inbetween the IP and the housing they used silicone instead, I was not to happy to see some of the shotty maintence work whoever did that. Am I waisting my money getting the injectors tested??

I have run gallons out of the drain hose with the valve on it just to purge air and insure the lift pump function.

It is possible to but not likely to break the i/p shaft if it's not puled down all the way. If you think you had them down will go with that.

No I don't think it would be a complete wast of money testing the injectors because if it had one suck closed that could be the problem with ti I/P. If it is stuck closed that would put more pressure on the I/P and if it got high enough it could break it.How many miles does the truck have on it? How much do they want to test them? If it is low enough that would say for sure if you got one stuck.

I usually pull the injectors out my self and alot of injection shops will test them for free.

It has over 200,000 but I don't know how many miles on these injectors since someone has obviously done some work to it. Your suggestion sounds like what the mechanic said, I would think if the injectors were weak it would not cause a problem but if they were seized then maybe cause this failure.

I don't know how much they charged to "test" them but they quoted about $400 estimating about 3 or more injectors needing replacement, I think from the way it ran it may be only 1 that is bad
