Default 7.3 no start when cold

Hey Everybody just bought a 1989 ford with 7.3 from original owner out west. got truck wouldnt start just cranked when cold outside temp here about 20. He only had one battery I replaced both batteries with 1000 cranking amps still wont start when cold, replaced glow plugs still wont start, relay is working dont know what else to check I read some other posts but not sure. When I go to first start in morning cranks for about five seconds and sounds like going to kick over but doesnt then just cranks like nothing. Any ideas?

Take a wire off one of the glow plugs and check for power there when you first turn the key on. It might have a fuseable link between the relay and glow plugs that has gone bad. Also if you have a block heater keep it plugged in and it should start after sitting long periods.

God those fuseable links are the devil. But its a good place to look for problems.

heres a question....

how long does the wait to start light stay on?? it should stay on for about 10 to 20 seconds depending on how cold it is, if the light stays on for that time check for fuseable links from the gp controller to the relay, i know from 94.5 to 97 they're next to the starter relay under the dash. not sure if they're the same..

if the light shuts off immediatly you might need a new controller but you said the relay is switching on so it sounds like the controller's working.
