Do you have 2 wheel or 4 wheel ABS?

OK the Airbag is controlled by two crash sensors in the front (inner fenders) and one crash sensor in the (ACM) Airbag control module on the transmission hump. The ACM performs a test when the key is turned on you get about 2 seconds of the Airbag light and if it goes out test is good. The ACM stores a code of the fault when the light stays on.I don't know how to get the codes. But if you do any maintenance on the Airbag make sure you disconnect both batteries and let the system sit for about five minutes to let the ACM capacitor discharge it's Voltage. Its a crap shoot unless you get the codes read.

so a person should be able to read the codes with a snap-on reader or do you half to go to the dealer?

Yes the Snap on diagnostic equipment will read and clear any codes in the Air Bag controller.
