HELP!!

I got my truck 3 years ago and has been a project ever since. I was told the IP was bad, so I replaced it, I found that the gear to the sprocket mounted to the camshaft was loose and caused the woodruff key to shear. I timed it and put it all back together and had a very difficult time getting it to start... ended up paying a mechanic to do it... The truck ran great for about a week but one night the truck stalled just after pulling out of my driveway, turns out the camshaft bolt came loose AGAIN.

I pulled it all apart and found that it was sooo loose i could have come out if the cover did not stop it. In trying to get all the timing marks to line up I had to turn the IP gear backwards about 1/4th of an inch. Once it was all back together I noticed the lines on the IP the you line up on the housing were off toward the passenger side. I had to put a lot of effort to move them back together. Now the truck will not start AGAIN... is it that the pump was moved backwards and sucked air back into the lines?? What am I doing wrong?? and if so what is the easiest way to get the air out myself??

If you need to re-time it, time the cam and crank first, then turn the engine 1/4 turn to the right. Time the pump and the cam. Now, make sure you got fuel to the injection pump, via the electric pump, or air to the fuel tank. When you got a clear stream, tighten the line. Unhook the relay controlling the glow plugs, then crank the engine over for a few seconds, then crack an injector line. Crank it a few more seconds, crack another line. Repeat 3 more times, no more than 3 seconds on each crank. Hook the glow plugs back up, cycle, then attempt to start the engine. Might take a few tries, but it should start.

If after multiple attempts you don't notice any fuel coming out of the injector lines, or any smoke coming out of the exhaust, got bigger problems.

 

ok so only crack one line?? I never tried that maybe that was why I was having such a bad time at this. could turning the pump backwards have caused the air??

 

There isn't anyway of turning the pump backwards, unless the engine was to. Either way, it's making pressure. Crack a line on one side, then the other. keep rotating back and forth.

 

Thanks, I will give it a shot, this truck has been kind of a pain but has been something special to me for giving me something to do.. Actually hearing it run was incredible, I hope this works I hait to have to dish out to another mechanic to do this for me

WISH HA I need a good mechanic buddy to bounce questions off of, my brother has the same truck but his has a pmd and problems with that, so he is bouncing questions off of me!! he is collecting older mercedes benz diesels to run on Biodiesel. I'm in Mesa AZ most mechanics around here are pretty pricey plus I like the feeling of doing it myself, I have learned so much about diesel on my own just by getting this truck.. loving it just if I could figure out how to master the getting the air out I would be happy
