i have a 96 cummings diesel that sat for a few mounths and now wont start i have prime to fuel filter cracked lines and gotten small amount of fuel out of them and still wont start?

 

hit the primer some more and crank it.............if yer gettin fuel it will run

 

I agree, crack open the middle banjo bolt and hit the prime button until fuel squirts out (if you use a 12" wooden dowel, it makes priming a whole lot easier on your thumb). Then close the banjo bolt.

Hold accelerator pedal down while your cranking. Its should run, but it will run rough for the first few minutes.

 

now it starts as long as ke is in start position as soon as you let off it kills

 

Ah, then its most likely your fuel shutdown solenoid. Basically, when you turn the key it pulls the solenoid up (you can verify this by actually feeling the solenoid move) - so what is likely happening is that the solenoid is not being held in the run (up) position.

Might need to clean up your linkage and worst case get a replacement.

BTW, I would look at chaning all the rubber feul lines on the truck - they are likely dry rotted after 13 years.

 

so you think that the selinoid needs to be adjusted not replaced

 

Yes. That is most definitely the place I would start. I would remove the solenoid, clean it up inside the boot and readjust - that should be your problem.

 

i agree if you think it is the problem unhook it and put a cable on it and manually pull the lever if it stays running then problem solved
