help
Ok guys I just got my first deisel and I think I messed up already.
Its a 1993 silverado has a 6.2 with an automatic.
The water in fuel light came on and well heres where I goofed up.
I got out of the truck with it running.
opened the hood and turned the water bleader valve.
after about 20 seconds the truck died.
I couldnt get it to start so I tried pouring about a spraypaint can lid full of fuel in the intake
It tried to start but didnt.
Ive been trying to get the thing started all day but dont know what to do.
I tried to bleed the air out of the fuel filter but i never got it to put out fuel.
it has the kind of filter that pushes on and two wire latches go over it.
anyone got any help?

Is your fuel pump running? This engine has a gear pump in the IP that will let it run even if the transfer pump isn't working but it is a nightmare to get started if air gets into the IP without the transfer pump working. Also did you crack the injector lines loose to bleed the air out of them?
The filter he has on that engine can't be filled first. It is a square box filter that pushes sideways onto the housing and if you fill it first when you turn it sideways to install it the fuel all runs out.
Try bleeding air at the injector lines, once you're sure the pumps are working. Also you may consider changing fuel filter while there may already be air in the system . Good Luck - keep us posted.
ok i had it toed home today and will try to see if the pump is working today and try to crack the injecters loose and turning it over to see if i can get them to put out fuel should i loosen them all at once or is there a certan way by the way thank you all for the advice.

Well it turns out it was coincidence that it died while I was messing with it.
Out of curiosity I switched the plugs on the fuel pump relay to the one that said alternate and it fired right up. so the fuel pump relay had gone bad.
Thanks to all who gave advice I learned alot.

I doubt that the relay went bad while you were bleeding the water. The IP on that engine has a gear pump in it so once the system is primed it doesn't need the fuel pump to run but when you opened the water drain valve you gave it an opening to suck air into the system. If the fuel pump had been running at the time you would likely have had a large flow out the drain and it could have kept the air out and the engine would not have died. It just happens that you found the relay problem because the truck died. It was a good learning experience though
