I've had hundreds of these transmission apart and seen alot of broken accumulator springs on the various years but not on a 48 yet it has a VERY stiff 4th accumulator spring
hard to understand 4th beind harsh , the OD piston has to overcome a huge spring for the forward clutch it would need incredibly high pressure to make it move excessivly fast
I'm wondering if there is problem with the sprag in the OD unit causing a flare bang type shift
are you getting any flare between 3rd and 4th ?
also I have never seen a stock converter lock up harsh , if this continues the piston in the torque will crack

3rd to 4th seems normal when not pulling heavy load. only thing i just though of that i haven't already said is when it goes to acting crazy it also shifts way early. it will be in overdrive with the converter locked by 35mph. i just talked to a cousin whos a tranny man in cordele ga planning to take it to him to tear down tommorow to try to see whats going on.

tore it down today. only thing obvious is front band is shot as i expected & 3rd clutches are toasted. i pull in od with truck loaded since the ol 5.9 has the torque to do it with out down shifting in my area (so Ga.) and tranny man says thats probably what fried the clutches. only thing left that hasn't been torn into is the valve body. maybe it has some sticking valves causing some pressure & timing issues?

pretty standard to have direct clutch fried, also standard to have problems with front band
Here is what I use on all the 48RE transmissions I build

box kit
superior 48RE shift kit
superior super servo
sonnax intermediat band cover
superior HD intermediate band strut
raysbestor high energy 48RE band
single billet or triple billet converter
billet accululator
superior no flip low/rev servo

this combo works awesome and if a person chooses I know for sure it can handle at least 100/120 extra HP maybe more but havent sold one to anyone running more than that
