Default 93 7.3 no start w/out starting fluid

I have a 93 F250 7.3 non turbo it will not start with out starting fluid when cold. After running it will start right up and runs good. Batteries are good, wait to start light comes on for about 10 seconds then turns off, the engine cranks and im getting some smoke but it will not fire, a little blast of fluid and it starts right up. Im new to deisel repair any help would be great.

I would love to know if you find a fix for this. My boss has an 02 f250 7.3 with the same problem. It only seems to do it on his when the weather cools down. I have tested the glow plug system and found it to be perfect but the problem remains. If you figure it out let us know.

If you have smoke while cranking that means that its burning something, what color is the smoke? Also if its only when its cold, im garunteeing you its the glow plug relay or the plugs themselves. And try a fuel filter for the hell of it. on the 2002 7.3 it's right on top of the motor behind the powerstroke plastice cover. (fuel filter) and the glow plug relay right behind the filter housing.

I know it IS NOT the glow plugs on our truck because I checked the glow plugs individually by ohm test and feeding power to each one and checking current drain. I also checked power out from the relay and battery voltage drop with them on. I have been fighting the same problem since last winter. I have also heard other people with a similar problem that the glow plugs tested good. The only solution on ours so far has been to keep the block heater plugged in when the weather gets cold. If you find a solution I would very much like to know to maybe solve ours too.
