cam position sensor code / no go
Hi Guys and Gals,
Here is the story. Traveling West on I-80 in PA pulling my 5er. I was coasting down, cruise control on, TST set at power 3 and the TM at 2, vanAaken on high, the hill toward the Brookville interchange. The cruise control started to accelerate climbing the hill on the other side of the interchange. Everything seemed normal until it started to loose power. I looked at the gage cluster and NO RPM,s (clue #1) but the engine was still trying to accelerate. Then the engine stut down with a boom and a plume of smoke.
I pulled to the side and put on the scanner. Had 2 codes. The crank position sensor, which I get all the time because of the TST, and a cam position sensor which I have never had.
Was towed to a local body shop, where the owner gave me access to his tools and garage. Luckily I had a sensor with me. Used but worked before the Rokk.
I replaced the cam sensor with the used one hoping that would fix the problem. No luck. I then took the old cam sensor and used it to replace the crank sensor. Again, no luck.
The engine will not start but tries. Sort of sounds like it is out of time.
Had it towed home and checked top dead center to make sure I didn't have a gear problem. The hard timing is correct. No fluids out of place.
What do you think????? Anybody had this before???
Thanks, Bobby

Losin the Tach and power is also symptomatic of the APPS sensor dying. There is a guide on here that shows how to test and reset the APPS. You may just check the voltage on the APPS wire coming out of the ECM to see if there is anything coming out.

Well I pulled the head this morning. This is what I found. Pistons #1, 3, 4, 5, 6 were destroyed. #2 is still perfect. What the heck? What do you think happened? I know what your going to say. I overheated the cylinders. Well my Autometer pyro was never above 1200*.
Could it be the vanAaken-TST stack along with the Rokk? To much timing?? I'm at a loss here.
Please give me your thoughts. I will try and attach a photo of piston #1.

Well I ordered a NEW engine from RJ Performance in Calgery. In stead of getting the ISB 250 SO, I'm getting the ISB 305 HO.
I guess that will fix it.

What can I say DM. Once I figured the probable repair costs, sleeve all the cylinders, replace all the pistons, replace injectors, rework the head, etc..., I would have thousands of $$$$ in a non warranted engine.
Was able to purchase a 305 for $6500. with 2 yr or 100,000 mile warranty.
I bit the bullet."give:
Wish me luck with this one.
