Default 12 valve cummins transmission problem (HELP)

I am needing help i think the transmission went out in my dodge today... So all it will do is go backwards but not forwards in any of the forward gears, also the truck is an automatic. so i pulled the pan and there was some metal shavings in the filter and oil and it smelled like burnt tranny fluid. also i wanted to know if a 5sp manual out of a 1992 dodge ram 250 with a 318 would work.

If it's burned that bad.. might want to be shopping for someone to rebuild it, or purchasing a heavier duty one. Probably fried the steels/clutches in it and it doesn't have the fluid pressure to let you even go forward.

i dont get why it will go backwards though and it shifts just like it did before when i go into reverse. also i was wondering with the truck running and in drive should i be able to push the truck forwards cuz it wont budge it just rocks back and forth like its in park.

It sounds like the forward clutch pack is gone. The reverse uses different clutches then forward so it can go one way and not the other If the torque converter was bad it wouldn't go at all. I would say it is time for a rebuild.

Yes I do but I won't be able to get them scanned and sent until monday night if you can wait that long. Are you planning to rebuild it yourself? Our 92 has over 1.2 million miles on it now. We have put about 350k on it since we got it. I have rebuilt it 2 times in that 350k miles and learned a couple of tricks to make it possible without some of the special tools they say you need.
