I have a 2001 dodge cummins automatic and today I was pulling an empty 28 ft enclosed trailer for about 30 miles, parked it in my driveway and noticed the whole under side of the truck is coated in tranny fluid. Just wondering if there is a known line that cracks on these, looks like maybe a tran cooler line but not sure its coated so bad I have no idea where to start looking. Any help would be of great help. I won't be able to post back until about midnight tonight eastern time. Thanks for any help

 

After you get things cleaned you can start it and watch along the cooler lines for a sign of fresh fluid or a drip. The lines sometimes rub together because of engine vibration and wear a hole in themselves. It is also possible that the fluid got hot and foamed out the tranny vent. If that is the case you won't see a leak at idle but you might want to install an extra cooler before towing again.

 

Converter seal may have went to.

 

How and where is the. Converter seal to check and what's a good cleaner to get all the trans fluid everything

 

Converter seal aka front pump seal. Pull the inspection cover off the bottom of the bell housing. If the converter is wet, seal is bad.

 

ok i am gonna get on this in the morning.... i know its tranny fluid and the tranny is really low so is it still a chance its the converter seal? any idea on how to clean this mess up off underneath

 

Road dust will dry it off, so no worries on having to clean it off. Had a quart scatter from a power steering blowing off. Let it go for a week and it was already dried off.

 

Cant seem to find anything yet, when I start the truck and have it in park it is still leaking but cant find where its originating from

Looks to be the trans cooler lines at the fittings. anyone run into this?

 

My cooler lines rubbed on the plastic bracket that holds them onto the oil pan up towards the front. Rubbed holes right throught the steel lines.
I band-aided one with some hose and clamps that lasted awhile, then the other line sprung a leak so I cut them and replaced with some 1/2" hose. No more leaks.
That was a fun job in the parking lot at work

 

yea i see that backet is broke on mine..... did it puke alot of fluid then?

ok verdict is the tranny cooler line on the return side is cracked. new one is ordered thanks for all the help
