Default Case 580d fuel leaking from exhaust

Hi guys I hope you can help!!!! I have a 86 case 580d backhoe loader It runs but very poor and smokes like a Bi*ch. I dont know ANYTHING about diesel engines but do have an extensive automotive backround. The guy I bought it from said this started after someone used an excessive amount of either/starting fliud. The smoke coming from the exhaust smells like raw diesel and not oil there is also a substantial amount of what appears to be fuel leaking out of the exhaust. Would low compression cause these symptoms? If so where would I check the compression? I thought maybe it would be a stuck injector so I swapped it with a different cylinder and it still get the fuel from the same cylinder. Im am reluctant to just tear it apart if it could be something simple. I know this is a really stupid question but shouldnt this engine have some sort of glow plugs? If so where would they be? Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks, Mike

Sounds like a bad injector(s)

Starting fluid has killed many diesel engines. It is so volitile it fires way before top center. I have rebuilt several that had broken pistons and rings because of it. Low compression does not heat the air enough to ignite the fuel and it is dumped out the exhaust or washes past the pistons to thin the oil. I think the 580 is a direct injection engine and since most direct injection engines do not have glow plugs the injector holes are the only place to do a compression test.Since switching injectors didn't clear the bad cylinder you probably have a broken piston. You can get a diesel compression tester from Harbour Freight for around $30.

Thank you so much for help Im gonna try removing the injector and looking inside with my bore scope maybe I can see if theres a hole in the piston or a scored cylinder.

Chances are if the piston is damaged it is broken ring lands which are not visible with a borescope.
